I realized that the spring under the gear knob is also missing. But I am not sure if the missing spring could cause the gear to remain in reverse mode. Any advice of what to look for? And any advice if the gear knob comes with the spring when bought new?

the solution was much simpler than I thought... the leather cover 'shoe' was attached other way 'round... once turned around, I had a 5th gear. So the only thing that's missing now is the spring... fingers crossed I can find this at some scrapy
