Hi new to the forum,
Quick bit of info, Just got a 1.2 8v 2005 plate Punto for our daughter.
We got it serviced as in new plugs leads coil packs and air filter,we also had a new gates timing belt water pump fitted, and a new sump.
On driving home when first purchased i put some petrol in, it started gave a slight judder and disapeared but management light came on, i popped bonnet played about to see there wasnt a loose lead or something light went off.so thought lead or poss bit of dirt with fueling.
Car then got above work done.
Daughter came in tonight Dad think oil lights on (me thinks sump gasket not taken),checks its engine management light,
So i start car seems very slight rough tick over, tweak throttle it disapears, drives lovely, stop and start half dozen times still we rough bit on idle, tweak throttle its away, running nice driving nice but light on.
Two hours later car cooled down starts straight away smooth no engine management light,
Any ideas, pointers, dont want to dive in and get virgin ecu unit yet.

Sorry on delay other family issues took over the week, Anyway Son put on his gadget thing,
2 codes

p0302 cylinder2 misfire detected

p0352 ignition coil B primary/secondary circuit

any suggestions people

ended up and ordered a wee hand held gadget for myself as well

Bit of a novice here but i am determined and feel capable ,lol famous last words
Looking at codes, missfire in cylinder 2 ,and the coil primary/ secondary one some thoughts
is the coil code not indicative that the fault is coil, back to ecu to at push cam shaft sensor, something that is controling the power to the coil for the no 2 cylinder,
I am going to check leads plus etc all the way back anyways, but my mind makes me think if the fault is further back, plugs leads etc may seem faulty, unless taken out and tested individualy with multi meter

That will be fun lol, be fuming if it is new pack, i got my man to fit two new coil packs when we first got the car thanks for your patience its appreciated
John

Funny thing here, when i take lead from no 2 plug and earth with engine running spark shows
all the ht connection sockets from both coils have sparks with engine running
plugs bit suspicious of the fitment of ht leads out the car they need a good push to click home, but when in place they seem loose and hard to tell if fully home? didn't check gaps will get feeler guage tommorow.
plugs wee pain cause my key aint got something to retain plug. like we rubber ring, had to loosen then try and katch with old bit rubber hose to get in and out.
What i have came accross so far is the pipe from the air filter cover split past connection engagement length to air filter, The gasket/ grommet that filter box sits on throttle body was a bit squashed up but reckon sorted if fitted to box before fitting to throttle body
engine running disconect from ht lead one at a time from first coil no change rough (one nearest front)
engine running disconect each ht lead one at a time engine stops
we will get there

Many thanks for all the input, I retreated today as we had grandson, but i have been researching and taking notes in a pad, left spaces for my findings.
After coffee in the morning i am starting from scratch checking plug/gaps condition, Ht leads condition , then coil swap around/ and ecu /coil check i found on the site, see where it gets me, Already had grief from daughter who thinks i should show it a spanner at 10 paces and it will run right before i get there, and that the parts i may need i keep in my pockets,
super dad better of with the soup leave dad alone
will let you know i am only a beginer in this home car maniacs, sorry mechanic stuff

Good morning to you all, i am feeling good hope you all are.
So out at the baby this morning or as in Scotland the wain.
Plug 2 checked and gaped 9mm bosch fitted rather than ngk but will sort at next service, multi meter check of plug resistance earth and continuity good
Ht lead multi meter check resistance and wiggle lead incase of break passed okay
didnt swap coils over, disconecting leads from coil pack nearest front
to no2 cylinder no difference same with no no3,
Whenever disconecting plug lead from coil to rear of car, no1 and no 4 leads the car stopped or wouldnt start
So used a test probe on socket to front coil, the one from the ecu the one with the small red insert and yellow coloured rubber bellow, removed them to allow me to touch connections, found one permenant live feed with engine running big bright bulb, next connection in same socket light very weak orange red glow wasn't sure of this made me think poor connection from ecu or ecu
Anway coffee time, and a wee visual look at things around ecu, trying to see wher ecu gets feed where it sends feed, for some reason i went started engine running rough wiggled the output socket on r/hand (passanger side) of ecu running rough, wiggled one on l/hand (drivers side ) engine smoothed out rough sluggish disapeared engine seems to be running an awfull lot better
For now i am not going to investigate further ,going to suck and see if fault comes back in the next day or two, if it does test cable, and ecu, keep the i think input sensor in mind
In all honesty i have never been mechanichaly in to cars always wanted to but was scared, This is my first go at anything, without being over confident i am chuffed to bits tickled pink with what i have done, but still mindfull it may need something else but i know my rough area where to start if this comes back in a day or two
I am going to read up now on testing ecu and and the wires in out incase they are shaking all about ( oh the hokey cokey)
You know most of all the help and the wealth of input from members of the forum has been of great benefit and help to me
AS yet no parts for, but i now have an auto probe (the sealey thing red) and feeler guages, a multi meter, and awaiting my own diagnostic reader arriving did have a big tool box full of spanners etc given one year for birthday
The wife is laughing she says i am no james bond standing in my bioler suit 6ft 20 stone and my digital probe at the ready

Thank you John

Okay touchwood seems good tried sons diagnostic tool expected the faults i got from tinkering both coils showing fault, cleared them and light, took for a hard test drive for about 20 miles steep hills some fast motorway and some town stop start
So far no miss no engine light, keep an eye on as things can come back
John

Here we go again round two the misfire is back with the light, need some guidance
Before a wiggle of the plug at the left hand side looking from front of the ecu seemed to sort,
But i did say we will monitor and see where we go.

So far here a is what i done tonight

1, diagnostic fault from wee computer, p0352 So coil b primary secondary windings

2, plug out check gap and getting spark at, no2, just thought should have checked 3 do tommorow night

3, Swapped coils around no different runs when disconnecting lead 2 and 3. with same miss

stops dead if 1 or 4 disconected

4, Cable from ecu to coil pack nearest front of car for plug 2 and 3.

removed yellow rubber and wee red guide, from cable,

Engine running, in brackets( with ignition lights on engine not running or

ignition off no lights as on dash)

Used a Sealey power probe that identifies positive and negative feeds.

Connection furthest away from front of coil solid red positive indication

( then negative with engine not running)

Connection nearest front of car fast pulsing negative light not very bright

Suspect its just cause its pulsing that quick

(no power indication of pos or neg when engine off)

5, Engine running remove no 2 high tension from coil outlet test with probe
negative flashing reading and spark

6,Engine running remove no 3 high tension from coil outlet test with probe s posative flashing reading and spark
reading notes wondering if i got 5 and 6 wrong way round but pretty sure the pos and neg are as i wrote

Footnote daughter said she noticed an egg sulpher smell when she got home today

So what should we do now.
I am away to try and read up on form and see what i come up with
Thanks John

been thinking about that, but what i dont understand i swapped coils around but missfire didnt change, so poss just leads and plugs, annoys me though becouse when we got the car the first thing i had done was new coils leads plugs timing belt oil and air filter
A couple of hours after getting we got an intermittent miss then new plugs etc just frustrating but not to be beaten

Forgot to mention in my checks tonight i had no2 plug out and checked and got spark,
I also put power probe in lead 2 engine running negative pulse
then in lead 3 posative pulse engine running
In looking at this and the test from the coil and to the to end of ht lead i appear to have a negative charge at plug 2 and a positive charge at plug 3, from what i can find out it is harder to get a good spark for combustion at a posative charged plug and ideal is negative,
What should electrical polarity be at each plug what i have a pos and a neg, or all negative, or all positive ?
going to pick up spare set of plugs tommorow see if i can get couple of leads out scrappies while passing
John
