I have a sneaky feeling that my coolant pump has failed. My engine has a horrible habit of overheating and whenever I check the coolant hoses, they are very very hot near the engine and alot colder near the radiator.

I blew the head gasket a few months ago and this issue has occurred since then. Is it possible that when getting the car onto the tow truck (had to drive it up there manually) and then onto my drive, I burnt out the coolant pump? I didn't get it checked by the garage...

Would this sound about right and how much would you expect it to cost to replace?
 
i posted on this very thing a few months back
the impeller was plastic and the overheated injun killed it
you can see the impeller if you removed the front metal water pipe by oil filter
this was a 1.2 16 valver

P.S. Are there any ways of double checking if it is my coolant pump, any tests or anything?

I recently had my pupm changed and cam belt at same time as it's not advisable to re-use it. It cost £180 with new coolant as well.
Thermostat is dead easy,£ 23.50 from fiat dealership, advisable to get gasket with it too as the old one is usually rotten. Just 2 bolts and it comes straight of. Make sure you bleed system after though .
 
If the car ran through last winter with old crappy coolant there is a good chance the pump impeller got ripped up.
