Hey guys n gals i have an 03 punto 1.2 8v and am having an issue withe starting!

The engine turns over but will not fire unless i manually spray fuel into the inlet.

Fuel gauge is working and the tank has fuel in it, ive changed the fuel pump, but even the new one doesn't kick in when the ignition is switched on.

Ive checked the fuses, and replaced the fuel pump relay.

Ive also checked then replaced the inertia switch with one i know works.

It seems like there's no ''live feed'' to the fuel pump, is this triggered by something in the fuel system??

Any help would be much appreciated before i take a sledge hammer to it!!

cheers guys
Dave

u could start with trying the fuel cut off switch i think its on passenger side near bottom of the dash if not does the key code light go out when you turn on the key after a couple of seconds if u hit a kerb or pot hole could of triggered the fuel cut off

ive checked the cut off switch and its ok and the key code seems to be working, the light on the dash turns off. so im stumped......

Disconnect the fuel pipe from the engine and see if fuel is pumped through.

Some models have a schraeder valve on the injection rail to check the fuel pressure.

Not 100% clear if you're saying that the engine won't start unless you stuff fuel intothe inlet (and it then runs OK) or it'll only fire when you stuff the fuel in (then dies).

If the former, engine temperature sender.

If the later, check the fuel pump relay connections (especially the earth) -- there will be a diagram in the Seicento Facory Manual (section 4, engine commands) which will help, although I can't vouch for the wiring colours. -- It's available from the downloads section.

Check also for a pulsed 12v to the injector connector(s) when the engine is turned over.

Assuming a cam sensor, check that out, too.

It's as likely to be wiring as a sensor/relay -- make your multimeter earn its money, rather than replace bits will nilly.

We have two identical puntos here, one running fine - the other not! We've substituded the parts from the runner to try to find the problem. Having swopped the fuel pump relay, fuses, inertia switch and the pump itself (breaking the tank sealing ring in the process - anyone know where we can source these from other than main agent?) all without success. The parts taken from the non runner work fine when transfered, so the issue must be with the feed going to the tank mounted fuel pump. Could there be another component which sends a signal to engage the pump? The AA guy who recovered it said it would run briefly with fuel sprayed in the inlet so there is a spark etc.

For bits but not from a main dealer, Big Mick at eurocarcare in Derby (Google will find.)

I'd start from scratch -- check for spark. If no spark and no fuel, it has to be the TDC sensor.

Otherwise, I'd suspect a wiring fault if known good sensors are not producing the desired effect. 80% of wiring faults are earth side issues (or so they say).

Until you get that fuel pump clicking away there must be a fault in the pump or its supply. You've eliminated the pump itself so look to the supply.

AFAIK, relay 09 is for the fuel pump. It is energised by the ECU. The signal goes through engine fusebox connector F, pin 12. Maybe check there for sound/clean connection. The connection at ECU is B6. Check that relay 09 is clicking in with ignition on. You could temporarily bypass the relay by pulling it out and putting a shorting wire between 30 and 87 in the socket.

Have you checked the fuel pump earth ?
I had a very simillar problem a few months ago.
There is a multi earth connection in the boot towards the back on the passenger side if memory serves. Obviously its behind the carpets.

I've now checked the fuel pump earth in the boot all appears ok, as are the feeds to the fuel pump fuses. Tried to test the wiring to the pump by tracing the loom - but without success. Definately a case of no power going to the pump. Where will I find the ECU mentioned earlier in the thread? I'm thinking there is a fault with the power from another source which allows the feed to the pump itself to go 'live'. Any ideas?

Check the fuses. You could also run a link wire direct from (a) battery to fuel pump. If it runs its a wiring/control issue. Don't forget, the pump wont run if the engine fuel rail is already up to pressure.

The fuses etc must be ok because these operate the coils and injectors and the sparks are ok.
There is a direct connection between the injectors brown/white lead and the violet/yellow going to the pump. The other side of the pump goes to earth via the inertia switch. Remember if you are check in for volts on pump it will only be available for a few seconds after ignition on.
Maybe a wire has been severed/rotted or an after market anti theft device has been fitted.
Tony.

I've tried the schader valve, assuming it works just like a tyre valve, depressing the centre pin - no fuel purged from the rail, suggesting not getting primed. No after market alarm/immob fitted just the factory system. Suggesting more and more an ECU malfunction, dry joint or broken wire - vehicle has worked perfectly for years, right up till last Friday, no signs or playing up. Its only low mileage 35.000 I think although its a 2002.
