Hello all,
Have been trying to fit a replacement bootlid to a Punto (the ones with the lip for the wiper arm - is that Mk2?), the old one was creased due to the owner reversing into a concrete bollard!
We reused the lock mechanism from the old tailgate, but the locking mech. fouls the striker plate just as it should be passing over it as the door shuts.
It basically hits the top edge of the plate just before it's swung round enough to miss, probably out by 4mm or so.

We couldn't see any way to adjust the tailgate fitting itself, so the only reason could be that that the inner body where the plate is, was bent upwards a little bit when it was bashed?
Unless anyone has any other fitting/adjustment quirks we're missing?! It didn't seem like there was really any fore & aft adjustment.

Cheers for the replies.
It is a 5 door car we're trying to fix, we don't know for sure what the donor car was.
Is there anything on the tailgate that would tell us?
This is the one we bought: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160614204421

We're getting the mallet out this weekend!

It's the lock mechanism itself that is causing the problem - as the bootlid closes, it catches the striker plate just behind the bootseal, before it's got level with it, it's still travelling in an arc at that point and not perpendicular to the lock plate, so it catches on the corner.
It's as though either the lock mech's been bent upwards in the accident, and dragged up the striker plate/attached panel. But the old one looks symmetrical & very similar to the replacement one, so still not convinced.

If the lock mech protruded less out from the tailgate inner by 2cm it'd be fine. Or if that plate was a couple cm lower, we'd be ok. We've adjusted the plate & catch on the car but it made no difference. Removing that plate allowed the tailgate to close.

We couldn't see anywhere to adjust anything else - is there anywhere?

cough - can anyone offer up thoughts about tailgate adjustment?
Might need to resort to packing with washers, which would be pants.
