X reg Punto 16V ELX - Started mis-firing one day, took it to the garage and it turns out that one of the ignition leads is earthing on the rest of the engine and, therefore, restricting the spark. I have been informed that the lead needs replacing. Quick fix was to wrap a load of insulating tape around the lead. This seemed to fix it for about 20 miles and then the problem re-occured.

Question is - has anybody else encounterd such a problem and did a new lead do th trick?

Regards
Martin

The fact that loads of insulation tape on the offending lead did the trick implies the diagnosis was right and new leads will fix it.

The fact that it only lasted for a while implies that the lead is rubbing on something & could well happen again.

I suggest chnage the lead for a new one and route it so that the rubbing does not occur.

all things must pass.

Cheers people. And yes Evil, I am new to this game ;-)

Not sure if this lead is available in Halfords. It's one of the ones that has a sort of tubular end that drops down into the cylinder bit of the engine onto the spark plug. This is the bit that was insulated.
