Having problems starting my car after leaving it overnight its a sporty Punto S reg recently had a new head gasket with skim a new starter motor and a new fuel pump, it turns over but just doesnt seem to wanna spark.
Spark plugs were renewed last year as part of a service.
Any ideas that may be helpfull spent a few quid in the last few weeks through advice from different mechanics all to no avail.

whip a plug or two out and see if they are soaked in petrol, if so then fuel supply won't be the problem, .....igniting it is the problem

what have the mechanics told you is wrong?

good luck

Well the first told my wife it was the starter motor which I told her it wasnt but she believed him cause hes a mechanic and I'm not so he charged and installed that and funnily enough its still happening!
The second didnt give me a definative answer because when I left it with them for a week it seemed to run as normal :/
But they thought it might be a fuel supply problem as it was turning over just not firing maybe fuel line was clogged but it ran so they thought it was ok but I had em do a new fuel pump anyway.

I must add that once it does start for the rest of the day it will start and run ok
its just the first start of the day that seems to be a problem :bang:

What do I need to remove one I take my normal socket set wont be enough?

As suggested, basic diagnostics, that you can do with your socket set.

1) When it doesn't fire take a spark plug lead off, attach to a spare spark plug, earth spark plug against engine and check for spark.

When was the car last serviced and which service did it have?

Cheers

Will have to pop out and get a spare couple of spark plugs

standard service last year oil, spark plugs etc..

its on just over 82,000 miles at the moment

whats the 'rail'?

I'm neither a mechanic nor a modder can just about manage an oil change or break pad change.

All I got is its a 3 door hatchback punto sporting 16 V S reg 1242cc

I dont know if its relevant or not but since I got it back from having the fuel pump changed the fuel gauge is all over the place when I accelarate or decelerate or when I go round bends it moves up or down a hell of a lot more than it did before.

thinking about it there must be a fuel supply getting to it as it runs when it does eventually start.
Its the initial startup thats the problem.

Not perticularly. If you ignore it, you may find that it will randomly cut out when your driving. Look for a 14mm OD pipe that connects onto a rail. Need a pic of your engine bay so i can point it out to you.

Fuel pump and fuel gauge sensor/sender are together in the fuel tank (accessible under the rear seat). This means that your fuel pump renewal and fuel gauge "all over the place" are quite likely linked. Probably worth gaining access and checking the connector is on OK and maybe take the unit out for inspection.

As for the "rail", this is applicable only to engines with Multi-Point Injection (MPI). It is a tube laying across the top rear of the engine that distributes pressurised fuel to the four injectors. If you remove the air cleaner assembly, you'll see a pipe entering the rail at the right hand end (if you are standing in front of the car). At the left hand end is a valve with a dust cover. The valve is similar to the ones on tyres, i.e. if you press down the pin in the middle, it releases the pressure.

CAUTION: Pressurised fuel is dangerous for two obvious reasons; it's under pressure and it's fuel. If you want to try releasing it (to satisfy your self that it was under pressure), cover with rag to avoid the spray and do it when the engine is cold (you don't want to go spilling petrol on hot parts, do you!). When you turn the ignition on you hear a noise from behind you - that is the pump pressurising the system.

If it's Single-Point Injection (SPI), you don't have a rail.

There is also a fuel cut-off switch that works on the inertia principle and should only cut off in a crash. If you suspect that, it should be on the floor near the passenger side sill. It's accessibleto reset it by pressing down.

right removed two spark plugs they smell strongly of petrol and are clean free from any carbon also tried with a brand new spark plug to test for a spark and there was.
I have a hayes manual and have found the details of how to remove the rail but I think i'll leave it till the weekend when I'm off work and give it a try.
Otherwise mah poor wee car will have to pay a visit to the garage again

may also have a go at the fuel sensor at the same time. :slayer:

I feel like mah fathers son now! (mah dad is a mechanic has been for 40 years now) :d

he lives in GLasgow I live near Manchester which is why hes not fixin it for meh! just if anyone wondered :)
