Hi mate,
The MAF or Mass Air Flow sensor, measures then amount of air entering the engine, along with its density and its temperature. This information is relaid back to the cars ECU (Engine Control Unit) which in turn makes adjustment to parameters such as fuelling etc in order to make the engine perform correctly.
When a MAF sensor is on its way out you "normally" experience a car that feels like its "running out of breath" eg the revs wont go as high as normal, and the car feels like its lacking oomph. This is because the MAF is telling the ECU that less air is being sucked into the turbo, and thus less air = less porfermance. Similar problems can occur when the temperature sensor in the MAF also gives incorrect readings, suggesting that the air is less/more dense than it really is. A good way to test it, is to try running the car with the MAF disconnected, and see if the problem persists.
Hope that helps,
Alan
