Hello,

I've recently changed my speedo cluster in my 2000 MK2 Punto JTD due to the old one having various faults.
After fitting the new one all the old faults have gone away but now the mileage is flashing which I believe, after reading many other threads, means the car needs to be 'proxy aligned'.

I've called my local Fiat garage and the woman on the servicing desk didnt really have a clue what I was going on about but said it would need to be put on a diagnostics machine at the cost of £45, plus (I assume) the cost of the proxy alignment and milage adustment. The mileage of the new clocks is less than the genuine mileage of my car, so I believe it is not a problem to have this put forward..?

Is there any other way of getting round this proxy problem, without paying Fiat's excessive prices? I live in Staffordshire, so if anyone knows of a specialist please post their details up on here.

Cheers, Craig

Hi mate,

Your 100% correct. Proxy alignment will solve your problem. Unfortunately it has to be done by fiat. The £45 should be it for the proxy alignment, no extra charge (miliage will automatically be set to that stored on your BCU). If you have any other fiat dealers near you, its worth ringing them as some charge less than other to be plugged into examiner. Should only take half hour.

staffordshire. . . which fiat garage did you ring? - bostons?

Cool, cheers for that Alan. Looks like I'll have to get it booked in With Fiat if theres no other option. I definatly can't live with it flashing at me constantly!
One thing about the mileage though, you said "mileage will automatically be set to that stored on your BCU".. Whats a BCU? Does it store the 'master mileage'!?

Mdeko..
I phoned Norris Brothers - Tamworth, and they were the ones who quoted me £45 to get it diagnosed (but their diagnostic machine is away in Italy getting fixed at the moment)

Also tried Arnold Clark - Oldbury, but spend about 5 minutes listening to 'your call is important to us...' so I gave up on them.

And finally, Arbury - Aldrige, but their servicing department is not open on Saturdays.

Thanks again for the help, it's much appreciated :)

There IS another option, It's an excellent pice of software called Multiecuscan. The cost is €50 (about £35) plus an ELM 327 USB interface costing about £20.
You need a windows laptop, if you don't have one an old windows XP one from ebay or freecycle will do the trick.
Software is here:
www.multiecuscan.net
You can download it and play before you buy it or the interface, just click on simulate rather than connect. It does far more than read codes.
A typical interface is ebay item 271275445368(picked at random, but make sure you get one that says it's modified for Multiecuscan). http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271275445368

Hi,
No it's not just a sticker. Most of the cheap ELM 327 interfaces from the far east have a 120 ohm terminating resistor incorrectly fitted across the CAN bus. This causes some weird problems. Basic functions work but high speed communications and more distant (from OBD socket) ECUs don't. The reason for my stating MES modified is that there are some interfaces that have modified wiring for other makes, ECU flashing etc, so just saying "modified" is not enough. The cost is £15 compared to £6 from China, but you have a UK seller and no shipping / customs issues. If you can identify the correct surface mount resistor and unsolder it without damaging anything, great get the £6 unit and DIY. I've no connection with any of the sellers I reference other than actually having bought from them without issue.

Bostons closed years ago..............retired. Dealer now is Platts of Stafford. I use them for work on my Qubo and have them very good and reasonable on price. They are long established Fiat dealers with their head base being in Stoke on Trent.
Cheers Qubo.

which one to unsolder?

The one that should not be there

Sorry I'm not a psychic, I don't know what interface you have, and even if you told me the make or ebay listing even externally identical ones often have different circuit board lay-outs. None of the ones I have done were the same, I had to work out which resistor to remove for each of them.

No ELM 327 will connect to all modules on all cars. Some will need adaptor leads, some (older cars) will only work with a "dumb" KL interface. The only single lead solution is the multiplexed package sold by MES.
You need to look at http://www.multiecuscan.net/SupportedVehiclesList.aspx and work out what you need for the cars ou want to work with.
