Hi I am new to the fiat forum, I bought my car two weeks ago of a person out of the autotrader, its a T Reg punto, I fitted a new CD player in it and now my battery is dead (I know nothing about cars) can anyone help. It also is leaking oil is this really serious and expensive ????

oil leaks are usually the rocker cover seal very in expensive or may be a sump rotted through also not to expensive were exactly is the oil coming from have you any pictures or is it simply falling on your drive nothing to worry about not a seriouse problem just keep an eye on your oil level thats all

the battery may be going flat because of something you have done fitting the head unit

if you get a 21 watt bulb like the brake light bulb for example if you have one lying around

and remove the battery earth clamp with 10mm spanner then place the bulb between it and the battery with all the doors on the car shut and everything turned off

if it lights up you have a drain somewhere in the car

then you can disconnect things like your stereo to see if you can isolate the fault

if there is no drain then it may need a battery or might not be charging properly you will need a test meter to test the voltage with the car running should be 14.2v or there a bouts to test the alternator

Thanks for advice. I am a student so i can't really afford to start repairing major things with the car. As soon as the battery is sorted out i will take it to a garage to get it serviced and hopefully they can sort the oil leak. Also how much will a rocket cover or a sump cost me ?? The oil warning light on the dashboard is now on and the battery warning light is on, i don't know if it means anything serious, before i take it the garage i will put more oil in untill i get to the garage

Someone I know recently had the sump and gasket on his mk1 Punto done for about £130, which I thought was very excessive, but there we go. Get the part and do it yourself. P1ss easy!

As for being a student, so am I, and unfortunatly when it comes to cars, they always cost, and somethings can't be put off (legally!)!

But that way you will never learn or develop, this is an ideal way to start learning, easy and cheap.

i did the rocker cover the other day no problem
Stopped the engine bay been made even more mucky

Take air fitler box off - 4 screws holding the cam cover on
Take old seal off - Wipe edge's down with wragss and then then a little white spirit to clean em- leave it to dry and then seat the seal correctly - bolt head down and Sorted

Takes 30-60 mins depending how slow yah are

Trust me (I'm a bomb tech) changing a sump is one of the easiest things and you can't brake anything!

And if worst comes to the worst, just get a garage to finish the job, they won't charge anymore, and if you do manage it then you've save yourself a few bob

P.s, I'm not a bomb tech, lol.

so i suppose you could sneak some bomb stuff out and and make yourself a bomb for that revenge you've been seeking lol

and as far as things going wrong well rocker cover gasket no nothing can go wrong

sump plenty can go wrong

firstly he could break the studs out of the alloy pieces at either end meaning a new oil pump or crank seal housing required so have to be careful with the nuts at either end secondly he could break the pick-up off wile he prises the sump off

and finally most people don't understand how surgically clean it needs to be to get the glue to seal all the way round witch is hard when the engine is dumping oil on you continuously ave to wait for it all to drain out

o an the rocker cover will also need some silicone glue in the corners as per my guide in the punto guide section have a look don't just wang a seal in or it will leak again

but anyway to answer his question

rocker cover seal under a tenner
sump about 40 quid
sump sealer from fiat tenner
if it is a sump you need you might aswell change oil and filter also as it will need to come out anyway

No my uncle knows a bit about cars, he has just come down and got my engine started and both of the lights went off (i did say i knew nothing about cars) but 5 mins after he left smoke started to come out of the bonnet and water started leaking from the front.

I see what your saying now. I personally always thought it was the other way around (I personally would dread doing the rocker gasket), but then again I've never done a rocker gasket, so as they say, you learn something everyday

Was it smoke or steam? Just thinking if the water is leaking it's more likly to be steam maybe? But I could be wrong

That could be the water leaking onto something hot then.

This might sound stupid but it was coming from the water tank (i don't think thats its technical name) but it was coming from the tank where you pour the water in lol it was boiling and seeping out of the top

We had a similar issue in my GF's Punto and couldn't trace it until she got rid of it and we put the stereo in my Seicento. The battery died daily - I followed this guide and no-more battery death
