Angry My bad experience with 1.3 mjtd

Hello guys, i`m a recent owner of a 2011 punto evo and i want to share with you my experience so far. Ive got the car for 6 months now.

So, lets begin :
Its a Punto Evo 2011 1.3 multijet 95hp (199b1000 engine) 2doors, i really like the looks of it, but unfortunately the tehnical problems could make me get rid of it

So, since i bought it :
- I noticed a slight chain rattle at start-up, so i replaced the timing chain at 125.000km
- Oil and filters also replaced at 125k

My exhaust getting black because of smoke got my attention, btw i was a mechanic so i saw a lot of VAG 2.0 tdi cr engines with well over 200k maintaining a clean exhaust, some even after 300.000 km

So i started logging the dpf regens, and all seem right, i get regens at around ~500kms they last under 10mins, differential pressures at idle after regen are below 5mbar.
I clean my exhaust tip and it gets black after around 300kms, and i noticed a slight combustion knock when engine cold (could be a injector).

At this point i was just like **** it, i will get used to it, maybe its how 1.3jtdm work although it didnt seem right.

At around 130.000km i started to notice decent black smoke when revving stationary so i decided to physically check my dpf aaaand surprise, my dpf is broken into pieces, this is what i saw from the bottom so probably from the top its molten. I cant understand why, i drive it daily 140kms on the highway
so cant say the dpf goes thru harsh conditions.

Next week i will remove the dpf and get a remap. i`ll keep you updated. Hope nothing else will go wrong xD

If you got similar experiences, share them with me here, so i dont feel alone

Re: My bad experience with 1.3 mjtd

Timing chain on the 1.3 is a well known weak spot and a rattling chain is your first clue the chain might need replacement.

So after 125k km you did some preventative maintenance and changed the oil....

Then you noticed that the dpf is internally broken at 130k km? Did you buy the car brand new or second hand, do know the full history of the car and what life it’s lived?

Honestly if they are the only two issues you have then I’d say that’s not two horrific, but then again I can appreciated they’re both potentially expensive things.

I have the 1.6 multijet and that’s very smoky so it makes me wonder if I should take a look inside the DPF. Then again mines done more like 280K+ km

I bought the car at 119.000km, it was serviced at fiat in italy until 85.000km no history since.

I know the timing chain is a common problem, but still, only 120.000km?

Its not about the costs, im doing the dpf delete myself, im just surprised they fail at so low mileage, like i`ve said i saw 2.0 CR-TDIs from Audi at 300.000kms with dpfs in perfect working condition with clean exhaust tips, that makes me sad.

Your should check your dpf, yes.

Hi

The chain NEEDS clean oil.. potentially running for 40,000 on junk oil would not help

My mj's are before dpf 2007/8.. so simple to service
currenly on MILES

106, 96 & 78 NO problems

In the UK well serviced vans do 250,000 without chain problems

Do consider you are comparing a 1248cc with @1990cc

So a ~35k km period where there is no history? It may have no history because itís had no servicing which is a killer of cam chains on these cars.

The DPF could be someone who is cheap deciding to smash the inside of the DPF rather than replace a blocked filter. It certainly sounds like itís had a time where itís been unloved

Re: My bad experience with 1.3 mjtd

Got the dpf removed today, monday i`m going to remap it.
2blocks from the dpf were broken, beside that the dpf looked good, clean, i have no idea why it happend, they were broken like from the middle of the filter.

Pretty smokey right now, will see after the remap.
I suspect it maybe remaped in italy (its origin country) i have had some experience with cars remaped in italy being pretty smokey (bad maps).

A friend of mine owned an AR 159 1.9jtdm 16v bought from italy, he went to remap it and the tuner saw it had already a stage 1 tune with dpf off, although the dpf was physically on, and actively regenerating (WTF?) .

Expect more surprises on a second hand car bought from Italy.
