Ive owned my 2010 Punto Evo since may last year. in around January I got a warning message saying "Excess radiator fluid temperature please stop and turn off engine" this then dissapeared after about 5 seconds, my temperature gauge itself was in the normal range/area for the engine temp and is functioning fine. I had my usual mechanic check it over and it was fine.

Today I had the message come up again and disappear again while driving. it then came up again and my temperature gauge shot up as high as it could go with the High temp warning light coming on then went back to normal again as I started to pull over and stop.

how concerned should I be about this? and does anybody have any idea what the problem could be?

Also when i'm about to set off the car seems to cut out sometimes. id say it was stalling but normal with the start stop system I get the message to put the clutch in to restart the engine and in this case I don't get anything.

Hi. Probably electrical glitch.

Look in Grande Section

FAQs and GUIDES.

Charlie
thanks i'm thinking its that. although my mechanic reckons its overheating. and it has an engine fan error when reading faults. The fan is wired up to a switch as for some reason it doesn't work automatically its been this way since before I bought it which is possibly causing that error and I ensure that I don't let it get too hot and use the fan.

to me it seems electrical as my temp gauge doesn't seem to work correctly as I will start it up cold and it will shoot up within 10 seconds of starting up and say its over heating and then go straight back down to cold.

ive also noticed I can do a approx 100 mile drive and the temp gauge functions normally yet I can do a short 6 mile trip and the temp gauge does what it wants.

I'm going to investigate further myself check any connections aren't loose or anything.

ill update this thread once I know whats up.

Had a similar problem on a GP. Turned out to be the MAP sensor.
(Or perhaps I disturbed the wiring while changing it, and that fixed the fault. Was a roadside fix and never seen the car since)

The modification to the fan sounds like a bodge to get around this or another issue. It's very hard to know what is going on when someone else has been messing about. I'd change the temperature sensor (cheap and easy) and watch out for other signs of overheating.

thermostat too, ;)

IF you have access to diagnostic kit.. you could always see what the water temp the ECU is reading / showing:eek:

Could be a sticking thermostat valve, would explain the rapid fall as it opens and lets cold coolant in.

Diagnostics should tell you correctly what the temperature is doing.

I'm thinking its the temperature sensor. as im now getting no reading on it intermittently. Wheres the best place to purchase one?

Hi,
Simple part so your favorite local supplier, Eurocarparts, Fiat dealer or mail order / ebay.

Robert.
do you know if there is a guide for changing the sensor ive got the sensor and im trying to do it and im struggling to get the connector off i can see the yellow clip thing but its round the back so i cant get to it to see it fully to work out how to get it off.

i managed to get it off in the end managed to get a screwdriver in there to get it to release

changed the sensor and it seems to have cured the problem.
