Hi all,

For the past few months in this cruddy weather I've been hearing a very rapid knocking/tapping noise when I slowly pull up to a junction or stop the car. I believe it may be brake related as I can feel a vibration through the pedals.
The sound seems to come from the passenger side wheel area. But to be honest it could be anywhere at the front of the car as the noise only lasts for a second or two when I'm braking to a stop.
It also only happens in the early stages of the car warming up, after this there is no noise when braking. My mechanical mates think the ABS/ASR sensor is damp and cutting the brakes in extremely rapidly but I'm not convinced as the car doesn't jolt or jerk about.

The only way to describe the rapid knocking noise is it sounds like the clapping part from the Friends theme tune! Brakes seem to be working 100% so I'm clueless to what the noise is. Any suggestions?

I would also like to know about this as mine does it aswell when I first use my brakes after setting off then it goes fine after that.
I have changed my break pads because they was low but that didn't stop it so I am going to change my disks to see if that solves it

ABS at walking pace should be hardly noticeable.. apart from pulsing the brake pedal..,:)

I suspect it's just surface rust on the disc faces.. BUT I'd be tempted to have it looked at.. maybe go to Kwik-fit / national tyres. etc for a free inspection and quote..,;)

Thanks for the reply. I may do this but I'm due to book it in for a service soon so I may get Fiat to look at it.

I have a very similar problem too, every single morning or at the start of every single trip, usually as I get into 3rd gear and accelerate I hear a clunking sound and it feels like something has shifted...

I can sometimes replicate it if I accelerate hard then brake, it then feels as if something has shifted again and it makes that grinding knocking noise that was described, as soon as i accelerate after that it makes that same clunk that I get at the beginning of the trip.

I have taken it back to the dealers a few times but because they cant replicate the problem reliably they say that nothing is wrong, i have also asked them to check if they see evidence of anything loose but that's wishful thinking that they would check.

Its also a multiair turbo with discs all round.

How odd! I don't know enough about car mechanics to suggest what it may be. Mine is a 1.4 GP so discs only at the front.
I haven't heard the noise for a little while now so I'm assuming it's caused by cold weather. Do you remember ever hearing your clunking in warm dry weather?

I thought it might of been my top mounts at one point but if that was the case the noise would of continued especially when turning corners etc. I had a mobile mechanic look at my rear suspension the other week (different issue that turned out to be nothing) and he said everything looked solid underneath. Maybe these little Italian cars hate British weather and these noises are just them ranting about the cold!

Hiya

I am having the same problem, recently had my Fiat Evo 2011 serviced so had the pads and discs changed but now (about 3 weeks later) I am getting a clunking noise from my breaks and my pal who is a mechanic and serviced my car said it could be the carriers being worn and the pads being slightly smaller and moving around.....anyone think this sounds about right? He is going to look at my car for me though so I will get back to you.

Morning Varesecrazy

How are you?

Yes I got my car cheched & back last night and it was front right spring, a whole section had snapped off. Had my front left pax replaced a few weeks back and hit a pot hole on the Friday so that and the added pressure of new v old caused the snap.
