Hi,

Over the last week my Evo has developed several faults:

The passenger side brakes get very hot after a run.

There seems to be an occasional squeak from the dashboard area when i am turning the steering wheel in cold weather but only when going really slowly/stationary.

Since the car was new there has been a horrible knocking from the front end whenever i wheelspin (easy with these **** tyres). This has recently gotton much louder

As of yesterday, whenever i do a faster pullaway than normal I hear a knocking noise from somewhere in the front suspension.

It doesn't knock when hitting potholes, but occasionally i hear it when i go over a really bumpy bit of road.

I only have 23'300 miles on the clock so i can't imagine anything is worn out. I have rocked the engine with the bonnet open and there does seem to be a lot of movement on the left, top engine mount but the rubber doesn't look to have degraded.

are there any common faults with Evo's that are likely to cause these?

Thanks,

ok, update. I didn't get a chance to look at it over the weekend but a few test drives shows the following:

If i floor it through the gears their is a constant thump from the engine bay all the way in 1st and 2nd gear. Nothing at all in 3rd and above. Also, i noticed the car wander a little bit when i floor it. Now that i think about it for the past few months i have noticed i have had to make lots of adjustmants to the steering to keep it straight but i assumed that was the **** Aberdeen council roads.

Hi,
really need to have it looked at, theres a LOT of things it COULD be,

I'm thinking ;

1, CV joints - unlikely at mileage, try turning REALLY tight circles in a carpark-on tickover , would go bang-bang-bang on full lock.

2, loose engine or gearbox mount - less forces applied in higher gears.

3, steering / suspension issue = kneel down at a front wheel, grab the wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock , wrestle the wheel left and right, does it move the steering wheel?,
then do the other front wheel,
look for any differences in the pressure needed to nudge the steering wheel doing this - that is wear and tear / damage / failure,

let us know what you find,
Charlie

will do. thanks.

It is booked in with the dealer on the 7th of march however i will look at it myself sooner as they said if it is not covered under warrenty then i will have to pay £80 labour for the inspection! (I made it very clear to the Arnold shark monkey that if they don't diagnose what it is then i am not paying a penny).

hi,
personally I would put it in for a "cut-price MOT" @ £35 and mention you've had strange noises from the front,
they will give it a PROPER test AND quote you sensible money to fix it..!!,

Never thought of that. Brilliant idea, thanks.

Problem solved though. Had to top up the coolant today so whilst under the bonnet i had a good look around.

That b****y bar that hits every rut on rough roads has gotten bent, I hit a rock at 20 mph just after i got out of the ice. Either that or it was when i was trying to drop into a piece of road with no surface when the idiot contractors decided to dig up the road in BOTH directions to my parents house so they where completely inaccessable.

See the attachments. If i can't straigthen it out then i will need a replacment. The exhaust is also dented where the bar crushed it.

Also attached is a pic of my top drivers side engine mount. Should it look like this? The rubber is quite soft and there appears to be nothing to stop the engine moving up and down.

Now, got to cancel the stealer visit.

glad you found it..

can't quite tell with the bent bar what it is/ does,

is it just a lightweight support - holes / slots all along it's length?

if so just bent it back,

Engine mount.. MMmm - not too sure looks a bit worn / degraded,
maybe just book an oil change at the FIAT place and mention it ( if the cars still under warranty),
otherwise see if it's a common issue,
Charlie
