Hi.
In another post a guide was mentioned detailing changing the thermostat without a full coolant drain leaving the matrix full. Anyone point me in the right direction as cannot find it?
Could I Syphon the coolant from the resovoir to the bottom of the tank making that level low then just remove the thermostat catching what drains out?

Were bad for trapping air.. so people did thermostat swaps with the system still 'sealed'

I used that method on my 1108 panda.. it worked well.

Leave radiator expansion chamber cap IN PLACE:TIGHT

Leave the BLEED PLUGS IN PLACE : TIGHT

this will mean that the coolant only escapes (bleeds back) slowly

So you can remove old thermostat.. scrape off remnants of gasket.. then reassemble with new in @1 minute :)


Once all tightened back in place..

Remove rad cap.. top level back to max line

Start engine.. and run AT IDLE until cooling fan cuts in
WITH COOLANT CAP OFF.

then let cool.. restore coolant level ( to Max. Line then replace the cap

DO check the level regularly..and look around for leaks ;)

its quite High up so you don't loose that much.


personally I take the battery, its tray and coil packs off.


its is possible to just remove the thermostat but its tricky to clean up the mating surface. it works out quicker and easier with the coil pack and tray out.

Got it done and now warms up properly.
 
I syphoned the coolant from the resovoir until there was none to see. At this point I wish I had read about leaving the cap on as I forgot to do this.
The rest seemed easy, removing the air box, coil pack holder and then unbolted the thermostat.
I didn't lose lots of coolant.
Had to replace the clip holding the pipe to the thermostat as it wasn't keen to let go!

Took the car to the hand car wash as a test and all is well with a toasty heater.
 
Just done mine. The engine warning light came on (one coil and all four injectors (apparently). I bought two coils as the second would not be far behind. It was easier to remove the coil bracket than fiddle about with eight little socket cap screws. The ECU is quick to remove and helps working space so did that as well.


All that exposes the thermostat making access easy. Our stat was sticking at times so did that at the same time. Two 10mm AF bolts hold it in place. Clean the gasket face and fit the new thermostat. I like to use Loctite 518 on the gasket but its not obligatory.


I replaced the coolant. It's been in the car since we bought it so replacement made sense. The single use hose clips pry off with a medium screwdriver under the tag.

Flush the system with clean water.
Fit the bottom hose with new clip. Add 2.5 litres of coolant concentrate and top up with clean water. Remove the heater hose vent screw to allow bubbles to escape.
Run the engine to full temperature and switch off. Loosen the heater hose bleed screw. If clean fluid escapes the air has been removed from the system.
