Hi guys,

I seem to have a fault on my 2006 panda 4x4 petrol, after 60mph the engine management light starts flashing, if you slow down below 60mph say 55mph it stops doing it and does not flash, the car drives good apart from this, any ideas please ?

Thanks

There have been similar problems like this before.

The flashing light is often an indication of a misfire and there's plenty of reasons for those to occur, but what seems to sort most out is a "Phonic Relearn", so it can relearn the positions of the crank and cam sensors.

It's usual to perform this after a new cam belt has been fitted.
If this works on yours and you have an old belt, it might be a sign the belt has stretched a bit

i. With a warm engine.
ii. Rev up to 5,000rpm hold for 3 seconds.
iii. Let it drop down to idle.
iv. Rev to 5,000rpm hold for 3 seconds.
v. Drop to idle.
vi. Rev to 5,000rpm hold for 3 seconds.
vii. Drop to idle.
viii. Switch right off and wait a few moments.
Then you're done.

You might need to do this a couple of times and see if it sorts it.

If that doesn't work, you are need to think why it might misfire or can't correct it's timing/fueling at higher loads, perhaps a small air leak on the induction side (check the Y shaped pipe from the underneath the airbox, the small pipe to the throttle body is prone to splitting)

Thanks for replying I will try what you have suggested, I did read after I posted the original message up on what other members have asked about this same problem, I appreciate you replying, having limited car knowledge of a postage stamp I usually ask the local mechanic to repair or replace parts many thanks

Is fiat different to other manufactures.

A regular flashing engine check light usually means there is a serious problem and you shouldn't drive the car as its likely to cause more damage

not to be confused with a engine light that occasionally flashes on

just asking.

Does the Panda still need the phonic relearn. Plenty of timing belts changed not requiring a relearn?

A flashing EML usually indicates a misfire and any damage is likely to be to the cat.

The phonic relearn is pretty standard advice of this forum for similar issues under similar conditions, a search will return post after post of similar advice, it's free so not a bad place to start.

As long as it's captured on youtube:D

Gotta love the Norwegian guy (2stroke stuffing) who's building a super performing 50cc bike engine. He's made his own dyno and has already had 20bhp at around 20,000 revs. But he's not blown it up on camera.

Thanks guys its been sorted and no EGL flashing or on, when I bought the car the guy changed the cam belt, so I did the rev scenario and it worked :)

I am having a “lumpy” run and when i rev too hard the EML comes on. I will try the relearn tonight! ?I hope beyond hope it works as I’ve had nothing but trouble with cars as of late, and my glimmer of hope is that the cam belt was changed after i test drove the car a couple of weeks ago and the problem only started after the engine had warmed up after day 2 of owning the car.

So on my way home the engine light came on (amber) and a message of “check engine” came on. ??*♂️
I tried the phonic relearn 3 times to no avail!
I’m disappointed as I’ve only had the car since Friday. Looks like will need to plug it in for a diagnostic.

If the light stays on, that's what you need to do.

Once you have the code, post it on here, someone might know what's wrong.

A cheap generic OBD tool like this
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ELM327-Bluetooth-V2-1-Wireless-OBD2-Car-Fault-Diagnostic-Code-Readers-Scanner-UK/173877803429?hash=item287becb9a5:g:xMoAAOSweTlcuZKA
and a smartphone with Torque Pro (available for free from your Apps store) should be able to pull generic engine codes and reset EMLs.
