Technical Bonding with Becky!

Daughter in law coming round tomorrow to let me trouble shoot a "noise" on her Jazz.

Just to round off the thread you might all like to know that the "funny" noise the Jazz was/is making is down to the heat shield around the catalytic converter rattling merrily with engine vibrations. It's hopelessly corroded (the car's on '08 plates and I'm sure this is the original so I suppose that's not too bad? It's chewed it's way through two rear boxes and a center pipe in that time.). Had it been just a silencer I would have risked cutting the shielding off and just letting it run without but Cats get damned hot so I think it'll have to be replaced. In the spring all 3 of my children, their spouses and their offspring are having a week away together doing "healthy outdoor pursuits" in the lake district, so I've got a bit of time to find a good quality replacement cat at a good price.

Good thing this has occurred though because after jacking it up so I could crawl about underneath (yes I always use stands) I quickly noticed that both front tyres were looking worn (nice and even though so no tracking problems). My trusty PCL depth gauge revealed barely 2 mil left so they're going to have to use some of the holiday money on a couple of tyres!

Have you considered making a new catalyst heat shield from aluminium sheet? You must have some metal bashing hammers hidden away in the shed. ;)

My brother has an 08 Honda Jazz. It's very capable but so boring to drive. Motorways feel even more never ending than normal. I have no idea why because it does the necessary speed.

His replacement exhaust back box fell apart after about 18 months. The pipe to silencer weld had simply cracked through. I'm not sure why as it fitted just fine. Maybe new rubber hangers would have reduced the shake. The new pipe had all welds brushed over with copper grease. They do look less rusty than the old one so who knows if that's a help or a waste of time.

His other issue was a seized rear brake. A service exchange caliper was about £100 so not too bad.

I do. Bought one of those all in one kits of hammers and dollys you see on eBay or in the machine mart catalogue. Aspiration far outstrips ability though I'm afraid!

Absolutely agree. Daughter in law couldn't care less and is just pleased to have a car which seems to just go on and on without swallowing large amounts of money. The MK1 is well known for having poor "wandery" steering and her's is no exception. I don't mind, even quite enjoy, driving it around town. However I hate it vehemently on a dual carriageway/motorway where you spend all your time trying to nudge it to follow the course you want. It seems to lack any self centering?

On the original the pipe sheared where it's bolted to the center pipe. I welded it up again but it then cracked the pipe just a couple of inches further up. By now there was a lot of corrosion so we started again with a good quality aftermarket item. It sheared where the pipe enters the silencer box about 18 months later. As some corrosion was in evidence and as I've seldom had success welding up the thin metal used on the silencer body itself I fitted another box. The installation is easy and there was no great misalignment which might have caused strain. During the dismantle of the old part it was obvious that the center section was in very poor order so a new center section was also fitted as well. So now both the center and tail pipe are nearly new Just makes sense to renew the Cat pipe which should then outlast the estimated lifetime of the rest of the car. Only time will tell for sure though.

OOPs! tried to do some "clever" editing and as you can see it totally failed! - sorry

No worries it made sense. (y)

You just have to copy and paste the quote= header and /quote footer to each fragment. ;)

I meant to add, Mrs Dave's Panda silencer failed at the pipe weld into the case (same as the Honda) though it had been rattling for a while. I suspect reinforcement strap between pipe and silencer end flange would reduce the flex and metal fatigue issues. But who has the time to faff about like that.

I think I understand? Giving it a go here to see what happens

I had briefly thought of doing that but, as you say, life's too short! I also find that unprotected weld metal tends to corrode more quickly so the whole thing might turn out to be self defeating?

So, now to press the submit button and see what happens?
