I have had the EML decorating the dash. It keeps reading as EGR, air filter etc. It seems a bit confused.

Ah ... now that's a clue Dr. Watson.
The broken air intake downstream of the MAF could throw up those fault codes.
Get the pipe fixed, clear the codes with a scanner, and see how it runs.

Now that I'm home and I can see what you mean, you seem to have the answer. I'd go for the scrapyard approach and source a replacement that way. Shouldn't cost a lot and looks like an easy enough fix.

Thanks! It all makes good sense now. So, replace the air intake pipe? Should I get a new breather pipe too, and some clips?

If it was mine, I'd repair the pipe without dismantling. Quicker, cheaper and easier.
A good repair will last for years, for the cost of a couple of cable ties and a bit of suitable wraparound.
But each to his own, I guess.

Some jubilee clips might be a good idea. While you're going to do all this see what else needs changing at the same time but only if it needs doing. Also top tip get some rust convertor and while youre in these hard to reach places you can paint it on as you go. Not on the engine but everywhere else.
