I am after some advice, my wife has a Pander 1100 08 plate with 55k on the clock, it has just failed its MOT with a corroded back axle cost a small fortune to fix, I am wondering if a.anyone else has had this problem as it seems the part supplier said a few requests had come in, and b. if you own one get it checked out as it seems it was dangerous to drive, and we had no indication or warning.
I am not a expert when it come to mechanical issues.

Any advice would be great as I am also told it could be a latent defect.

Thanks.

First I've heard on here of such a defect. Was there any warning on last year's MOT?

Who's repairing/replacing it? Did you get an independent second opinion?

Would help to see some images of the problem.

Again not a problem I've seen on here over the years. Have you had it from new? Some photos would be good.

And bet it's never been Waxoyled, but was steam-cleaned vigorously in an earlier life.
The horrors of steam-cleaning!

The back axel is a very thick hunk of steel, which would take years to corrode to the point of being dangerous, there really should be advisories from previous MOTs not that these things really corrode to the point of being an issue.

Good second hand replacement parts are likely to cost no more that £100-150, the car is very young as well maybe if it was an early 2003 panda then it would be a more believable issue

I seem to recall reading about the same issue affecting a Fiat 500 - young lady owner if I remember correctly 'though where I read about it escapes me - possibly Honest John website?
Are there drainholes in the lower spring pans - if so could these become blocked causing them to hold water with the inevitable consequences?

Possibly the mot fail is at the welded joints at either end, which can look far worse than they really are when they start to rust, plus an over-zealous inspector!

WAXOYLE heap good medicine!
