the cost was £230 bit steep if you ask me

Nope, sounds about right for me,

Taking into account that'll include the CODE at £15+VAT when I got one a few years back, some people have reported being changed upto £40+VAT. Then labour of programming it, half hour being £45, then the key itself being ordered from Fiat direct.

Unfortunatly security, and as a result cheaper insurance premiums, come at a cost when it comes to replacement keys.

Well found this out yesterday afternoon that if you get the code as we have done put this code into the Car using the accelerator pedal she can now start the car and use it only thing is she has to use the code each time she turns engine of .she does not mind doing this till we can find cheaper than dealer fix for the problem

This is another reason to make sure you have 2 keys and all paperwork when buying a used car,
all this info is in the owners pack,

it MAY be cheaper to get the ECU virginised than mess about with buying 2 new keys,

of course it will be less secure..,

No it isn't, CODE isn't included with any UK Fiats sold new.

Will likely invalidate insurance also. Virginise the ECU is a term use more for uncoding it from a car that then removing the immobiliser function.
