MJ MPG yes another thread BUT....

I think this is quite incredible. On Friday I drove the MJ down one of the hilliest roads in Cumbria there are steep declines and inclines at the time I was towing my Mk2 panda 4x4 to a mates bodyshop on a dolly to get some bits sorted. When I arrived I checked the consumption which was 50.7mpg If I had been driving the 4x4 panda on it's own I wouldn't have got any more than 39-40, the next day I took the trailer with some additional parts to be sprayed (sump gaurd etc) and was getting 74mpg I just find it incredible. Although if on a run down the motorway the MPG is slightly dissapointing even when sticking to 70 ?

Re: MJ MPG yes another thread BUT....

I must admit, I'm not totally suprised to read this as I find something similar with my Mjet.

I agee, on the motorway at a steady 70 or so I get an average of about 61-62'ish but a long run on side (A type) roads where your limited to sub 50 speeds I get upper 60's or lower 70's as well - provided I keep on moving and dont get caught up in the 'stop-start' stuff.

I must say though that getting that kind of return whilst towing another car is pretty remarkable - well done!

Re: MJ MPG yes another thread BUT....

Has anyone beat my record yet? 82.2 MPG on a 20 mile trip! Love it! (see my pic below!) I was going to try and beat it, but what's the point!? I read in the 2008 MPG marathon, 7 cars got over 80 MPG and 8 got over 70 MPG, it's not the car, it's the way you drive it! One of the best was a Mazda 2 1.4 Diesel which did 84 MPG!

The question is, are you up for taking on 84mpg as a challenge on their next event.

We are looking at you to uphold the Panda's honour

Trust me, I've considered it! I'd need a few practise runs, i think i could do it, considering there are a lot of mountains, hills, bends, etc here and i still got 82 MPG so who knows, on a long steady run... The shocking thing is, nobody entered in a Panda, but somebody did enter in a 500 Multijet, and they got 73 MPG only. Surprising as the official figures are slightly higher than the Panda's and obviously it's a lot more aerodynamic! Not sure i could keep up hypermiling for 2 days over 400 miles though! (although Richard Hammond did it for 7-800 miles in a Polo last week on TG!)

20 miles is too short really. Needs to be over a whole tankful.
A year or two ago I took the Panda from Oswestry to Fairbourne, which is about 50 miles, and almost all downhill on A-roads at 40 mph. Economy on the way there was stunning - about 90 mpg. On the way home it wasn't quite so good...

Could I? Yes. I've driven from Shropshire to Germany and back in mine. It wasn't bad.
Would I? Probably. I'd just be trying to avoid the journey altogether if I could though!

Easilly yes. Done a few long runs in the MJ and a few weeks ago 300+, it was an easy run and certainly comfortable.

Shouldnt be a problem. I do a 340 mile round trip in my Mjet every week or so (mainly motorway + into and out of London) and its great.

It averages 62 to the gallon over the journey and Ive never yet arrived feeling tired or achey.

Absolutely no problem. The Panda is the most comfortable car to drive I've ever owned, and that includes my Alfa 156, an Audi A4, Fiat Sedici and various Fords, Peugeots, Renaults and Citroens of all sizes. Of course its not as quiet or powerful as some (most!) of these others, but the driving position and seat height are ergonomically spot on (thanks to the tilting action of the optional seat height adjust lever). Took it to the top of Scotland and back in September. Not a twinge of backache. I usally need osteopathy after far shorter trips in other cars... the acid test is that my 156 is falling into disuse as I nearly always choose the Panda. The 156 gets to do shorter runs to keep it in order and where comfort is less critical: the exact opposite of how I thought I'd use the two cars!

This is not a criticism of the 156: it is more comfortable than most cars I have used, but simply not in the same league as the Panda. If of course you're not an old geezer with a dodgy back you'll just think I'm barking mad. Just wait a few years and understanding will dawn........

Re: MJ MPG yes another thread BUT....

Thanks peeps...
I am doing the trip in a 55 plate A4 tdi (not mine) and after 4 hours my back aches and my knee and ankle too... ave mpg 53...
I dont suffer like this from my 1988 Audi 100, or my 193 VW caravelle and 1992 VW Doka... and I have done many more hours in them....

If I could avoid the trip I would, but its work.. cant move the family again so looking at MJ or 100hp, would like a cross though... but out of my price range...
Need to go try them then...
MJ sit at 70-80 all day??

Again, no worries. Main reason for going diesel (other than fuel economy) as against 1.2 is the better high speed cruising ability.

Not surprised the A4 caused you distress. The seats in those things are apallling.... well built, yes, but bearing no relationship to the shape of the human body. As well as backache from zero support, I also used to get a sore bum necause the squabs are so unyielding. I think it could be a Germanic safety obsession to prevent the driver becoming sleepy at the wheel...!

I had one it will sit at 100mph all day. Your foot will invariably be welded to the floor though everytime there is anything approaching a slight incline.
