Friends Panda had a prang earlier on the nearside wing, light, bonnet damage etc. Its does drive but the abs is is showing unavailable on the dash. Is it safe to drive?

Sounds like a sensor got knocked. No ABS won't stop the car working and shouldn't stop the brakes working.

We can't say if the car is safe without seeing it though.

without sounding alarmist if that area has been hit the ABS sensor which if its anything like my Punto is located on the driveshaft if this has been bent or knocked back this could be the reason and you will do more damage if this is the case,, If the headlamp has been broken the lights will probably blind oncoming traffic. and the mangled Bonnet could fly up and put the windscreen through,,

If it wasnt your fault get it on a recovary truck and claim the cost back on the third partys insurance..

could do with some pics to be honest, even then it would be hard to assess the unseen damage, I'd imagine the car would be safe to drive but it would be without the ABS

Ask Fiat.

Yes, some of you are going to say that's a silly option, but...

the ABS has EBD which can affect the stability under hard braking if it's not working. It controls the front to rear braking bias.

Driving through heavy snow in the winter, my abs stopped working because the sensors got blocked with snow. There were no particular ill effects, just ordinary brakes. Shame really, could have done with abs on slippery roads...

Will get some pics up. If she is claiming on the other parties insurance, does she have to contact his insurer?

not normally you let your insurance chase the third parties insurance co, get as much info as you can, photos of the damage, photos of the road lay out, any skid marks resulting from the crash any witness details draw diagrams of the sciene ect ect. note the conditions of the road and weather.

Ideally photos at the time are fantastic if your not at fault shows the damage to both (or more) cars and shows where you ended up on the road all the more reason to cary a disposible camera in the car (change it every year or so as film can degrade in the car... ideally one of those disposible beach cameras are ideal as they are totally waterproof and built to take a few knocks.. and if your mobile supports video and you can get it onto your computer film the aftermath also a photo of the other driver incase they do a bunk and give you false details. (although some dont like it)...... any police officers number and name if they attended.

something like this is ideal
