Panda 2012 29k miles

Nice day so got the Panda on ramps to check condition of the sump.
Caught it just in time so a good wire brushing followed by 2 coats of Hammerite...

Whilst under there, I noticed a weep on the near side inner drive shaft...
Always something :(

All fixed and £380 lighter:cry:

Front discs and pads replaced, new driveshaft oil seals both sides
and a new off side spring which I didn't know had cracked...

Formula One Autocentre at Mansfield...

Oh, and the sump looks shiny with it's two coats of Hammerite black

Till the next time :D

I'm in the process of painting my sump on the diesel hack. Slightly worse than yours. I've used a flapper type grinding disc to take off most heavy rust, then I've coated with Bilt Hamber rust removing gel. Car is on ramps as we speak. Later I will etch primer, two coats of zinc, two coats metal paint, finished off with bed liner paint, very tough stuff that will stand just about anything.

Personally, in my opinion, Hammerite is ok but it's easily chipped.

The good thing about the Panda is that when the sump gets that bad, it’s cheap and easy enough to replace. Mine fell through last year at MOT time after taking it to a pretty thorough automatic car wash.. got an aftermarket one for £20.

This is on a 12 year old Panda so I’m surprised that it’s happening on a 2012 one. Same engine and part btw. Do you live near the coast?

When first manufactured, these sort of components are often just powder coated onto bare metal; quick & cheap, but not durable.

:yeahthat:

From personal experience, this will give you a good base from which to start; you can spray it straight from the tin onto most metals (steel, ali, zinc) and overpaint with practically anything.

Also available in rattle cans; even Halfords stock them.

Not cheap, but well worth the money. I've always got a tin in the workshop.

Nope, not near the coast..
Thanks all for the info on various treatments. Will getsome in stock.

Had a look under the back end this morning at the cross beam.
Very slight bits of surface rust but in good nick generaly.

The spring holder cups are sound and the drain holes are clear.
Sprayed a bit of waxoil in them whilst I was under there.
Main under body pan is sound so looking good so far

Mines just been done to, three coats of rattle can stone chip till it started to ooze off! As a bonus I managed to not get the cambelt or exhaust painted!

I would highly recommend using truck bed liner spray paint for the final finnish. Halfords stock it. Amazing stuff, not a mark on the sump, although only a week or so since doing it, the roads are pretty crap round here, full of loose chips/stones. I would use this stuff for other areas under a car that needs protection.

Just for the record, my initial diagnosis was going to be a new sump, but on further investigation I found that the sump was salvageable. This was by far the easiest/cheapest option. :) The difficult part for me, was to make the car safe on ramps so I could work under the car safely.

a large kerb would work just fine
dont use a motorway one though;)

I'm in my sixties & need more than a kerb. In reality, it's getting close to the time when crawling under a car will be a thing of the past. I have a metal hip, dodgy leg that was broken when I was 13 that has come back to haunt me, both my knees are shot due to many years of kneeling in the oil industry as a welder. I still like messing about with cars though, my sense of humor has never left me, just as well...:D

I'm just about the same with an imminent knee replacement, spinal stenosis and a double CABG that isn't behaving. Oh well heading for the mid sixties is allegedly quite young.:D
