Hi All,

Just been to look at a 2012 1.2L panda it had 19k on the clock and I was wonder what the cambelt interval was and if it was an in interface engine like the fire engines?

Thanks

Cameron

Think it's still 5 years/72k- whichever's first. Official Fiat belt kit (belt, tensioner and water pump) isn't that expensive. And if you trust an independent mechanic, use them. Have oil change maybe at same time (5w 40 C3). If the car not 5 years old exactly it could last a little longer, not worth the risk. And regularly use the revs and the VVT along with decent fuel. Plenty of go believe it or not, far better motorway car than has been suggested.

Thanks all, the car has been purchased from a car dealership (Sandicliffe) they said if it is due to have the Cambelt done then they will do it. We have paid a refundable deposit whilst they are sorting the car for collection. What can I do to check if it has had the above work carried out? Thanks

Quite obviously a receipt with proof of work done. Unless it's in the documents on purchase I'm afraid word of mouth would never stand up in a claim.

Thanks for this, so if I ask them to do an invoice showing the work done and stamp up the service book should it fail I will be able to take them to task over it?

Thanks

If I was in your position, copy of the parts bill, worksheet attached, book stamped and the length of guarantee on parts and labour on sales invoice would do me :)

I'd ensure it gets a new tensioner and water pump at the same time too. If they are paying they may just replace the belt being their cheapest option.

It is also a perfect time for a new auxiliary belt and coolant change...longlife not life-long in my opinion.

I will ask them to do the tensioner and Water pump and coolant at the same time. I will ask them to show me the old parts as they only had the one fiat in the forecourt. Do you know if the parts have the fiat logo printed on them?

Hi.
You have the right to receive the old parts. Obviously not old coolant but they should give you the belt, tensioner and water pump. The belt if it's the original should have "Fiat" with perhaps the make stamped on it. Gates belts will most likely have been the OEM, they make around 90% of belts for car manufacturers and have plants in Poland & Dumfries Scotland. When I do a timing belt job myself I insist on a Gates kit. I'd imagine if it's a Fiat agent doing the work it will be done with OEM Fiat parts.

PS. Continental also make first class belts :D

Just checked with our local dealer's website for a timing belt change, as this post reminded me our 2012 1.2 Pop is probably due one soon.

Ancaster want £199, so it I guess it's time to book it in.

I called the local fiat dealer here just out of interest £472 not including vat! Absolute joke!

They said it would take them about two hours.

What!!!!!
At most the parts would be £100 so that's £372 for labour so that's £186 an hour, they are having a laugh, charge more than RR dealer!!!

I'm beginning to regret buying a Fiat after some of the stories I read.

On Shop4Parts a belt kit is roughly what Trevor says. If my main dealer charged the same and 3 hours labour, that's just under £350 all in. Am sure that quote you got can be improved on, wouldn't take much effort.....

I had my cambelt changed on the 7th of this month at 70,000 miles,i rang the main dealer and they wanted £440,i then rang Mrclutch and they wanted £320 this included the tensioner water pump and coolant change i then rang an independent fiat specialist and then paid £213 for belt tensioner water pump and coolant change.

The dealer was fiat nottingham (T.I.M Fiat) after speaking to them I called a reputable independent garage they said £230 for everything. I picked the car up today and the dealer has done it as promised and given me the old parts to prove it. Just can't believe people will pay that sort of money!

I had both our 500 and Punto done last years at Mc Ewans in Derby (ind. Fiat specialist) They both were around the £200 mark.

The Panda isn't required for another two years but that's where it'll be going.

Punto now gone and replaced with a new 500L (Big Panda).:D
