I have a slight dilema that I thought I could share your opinion on...

Before going to Istanbul I was planning to have the gearbox reconditioned, as well as doing some engine work waterpump etc. However the current gearbox although loose has taken me all over the country without complaint and is not showing any signs of being a problem.

I know that on occasions reconditioned units that are not put together 100% and fail either straight away or withing the first couple of months.

So my question is this.....

1. Do I just stick with what I've got with a good service n oil change
2. Just go ahead with a recon unit

.
Make your oilchange and drive !

Do you expect more than 20000 km on this trip?

So what ? You are accompanied by air-rescue....

Another intelligent question is:

Which spareparts to take with you - best is

they can be fitted to all trip-cars ...

I think we already had the discussion that

the 4x4 Box can be used 4x2 without problem..

Regards Tom

P.S. Small portable soldering systems a available nowadays ...

- be prepared - make a course to use them -

Drive on the exsisting box and then if you still wanna splash out then treat it to a recon box when you get back. Like others have said.... if its not broke then don't fix/mess about with it. Just a good old fashion service and take some spare parts with you.

Well this has became a real nightmare. After fitting the gearbox and it failing Willie was taken down to the gearbox specialists to have the problem rectified. The bloke was going on holiday the next day and said he would do it when he got back. Willie has been there ever since (Early Feb) and after numerous calls most of which were full of broken promises I have now had to threaten legal action and strading standards to get him to make the gearbox suitable for purpose.

Meantime I have heard nothing from the buyer so would imagine he has pulled out loosing £1600 as well as the £300 I paid to have the gearbox reconditioned. I've also got the feeling that when it is done (he has a deadline of Wed or I will def take legal action) that it's still going to be crap

The only good news is that Willie is still mine......

Sorry to hear that Alan, wish there was something I could do to help.

In my ( limited ) experience, the legal route is the only way to go in a case like this. It is, sorry to have to say, a sign of the times.
Rgds.

I'd hate to compound your misery Alan,:( but does anyone have any good experiences with a recon gearbox, are there any specialists out there that anyone could recommend? In the Land Rover world there are people with a good reputation, but I guess the Steyr Puch gearbox is a niche market.
Both my 4x4 gearboxes are noisy, but I've never heard one from new to compare them with.

Mike
