Punto multi jet won't start

Hi I have a grande Punto van multijet 08 which Recently failed it's not and so I have used the help and advice on this site to fix all the problems myself brake light switch, new springs and various jobs. Which brought me to my final job. An engine management light it has been on for the past year and never caused me any trouble so wasn't bothered about fixing the issue. So what I did was take the battery off for 24 hours or so hoping that this may reset the problem. When I have Hooke it back up it doesent start! All dash lights come on radio and a clicking at what I think is the solenoid. The battery is charged I cleaned all the contacts and have checked fuses even ran a separate earth off the negative. HELP??? On top of this I have always used the spare manual key as the original has never worked could that be a clue to the issue?

despite being cleaned and a new earth added it is still likely to be a wire thats causing the problem. the fact the solenoid is clicking means its trying but not getting the amps in needs. make sure every clamp is tight, that there is no grease or oil on the terminals of the battery and make sure everything is charged.

If you've added another earth then its possible the live has fractured in side when you took it off and you may need a new one. Try giving the live cable a good wiggle an see if it helps.

After all this one thing is for sure you will still have a engine management light on, as pulling the battery won't clear them.

Last ran a couple of days ago with no issues. That's why I was shocked at something as simple as taking the battery off would cause a problem. Will have another play around with cables tommorow. Could any key problems be ruled out?

No padlock. Yes so I've heard that's a silver lining I guess. I'll trace cables from battery tommorow and hopefully there will be an obvious syptom

Sorry for the extremely late reply had a load on what with work firing back up. Anyway charged the battery. Can't find an obvious wire fault. Checked all fuses. And there is a different issue now with regards to starting. Imobilizer symbol stays on when I turn the ingintion no solanoid click nothing. Engage reverse and solanoid kicks in also the fuel pump wirrs. Close to admitting defeat here might have to actually call a mechanic lol

Hi.. if I read that correctly..

Selecting reverse helps..?

Sounds like classic earth cable failure

Put a jump lead cable from battery neg terminal.. to engine metalwork

That should sort it as a test ;)

I was thinking the same thing.

But could be both parts of earth cable failing the part between the battery and engine and battery and vehicle body.

So maybe two jump leads , one between battery negative and clean metal part of engine and the other between clean metal part of engine and clean metal part contacted to vehicle body.

Cheers for quick reply. Yes in reverse helps. Will try double earth this afternoon. A feel like the problem is being narrowed down lol we will get to the bottom of it

Ok so good news boys. Battery to engine point no joy. Then added the engine bay to the earth point and the old girl fired up to my delight. Just had the van out some about 5 miles, turned it off and it fired up again no problem?? Strange one but I'm happy anyway thanks very much for the help most appreciated ?

Re: Punto multi jet won't start

You definitely need to replace the engine to rest of car -ve wire it may be one piece with battery -ve as it looks to be on way out.
If you don't do it soon you could have worse problems later on.

I have seen on this forum these lead can disintegrate inside the insulation
