Hi all my daughters 07 grande punto has snapped a gear linkage. I have removed the broken one and a replacement has been ordered my problem is is there any advice please on setting up the new linkage so I know that the gear box is in the same gear as the gear stick in position as obviously dont want gearbox to be in reverse and the gear stick in 2nd . Please offer as much detail as possible making it idiot proof for me .

The linkage is a predetermined length, it should be a simple case of fitting the new one and it works.

At worse there is a little adjuster on some (not all) cables just to aid if the gear stick ends up in a weird spot, normally adjustment only helps with reverse where there is a block to stop accidentally selecting reverse. Once you fit the new cable you’ll sees it’s actually straightforward and if there are any problems then that would be the time to come back and ask

As Andy said, SOME systems are equipped with a self adjusting device. The idea is to "unlock" this device, bring the GB in neutral, lock the selection lever in its set position, fit the câble end on the GB lever, relock the device and unlock the selection lever...

This of course doesn't apply if you don't get that spring loaded unlocking device on the replacement cable !!
