I've owned my Multipla for a few months and never had a problem but today nearly half a pint of water poured out from under the sunroof switch and onto my lap. (n)

Is there a quick fix or is it a FIAT quirk? :bang:

Hi Phil

Yep yesterday had the same problem as you. First thing in the morning I went to use the car, only to discover the drivers seat was soaked and noticed water dripping over the sunroof switches.

I too have only recently bought the car and have never had any problems previously, despite heavy showers earlier this month. I have since checked the roof and think that the problem is due to the roof not having closed properley. Previously when I shut the roof, I released the close button as soon as I thought the roof was closed, as opposed to holding it for a further second to ensure it has gone full travel.

The reason I say this is, as soon as I saw the condition of the interior I opened the roof and reclosed it, and even with it raining heavily all night it appears to be no worse. Therefore, I believe it is now properly sealed again (for now at least!!).

This then poses the question of how the hell are you supposed to dry out the interior without the roof lining and seats staining, any ideas anyone?

I would also reccomend that you buy a very thin capilliary action silicone sealant such as "Captain Tolleys" or similar. This is a solution thinner than normal water which will creep along with capilliary action and seal as it goes and can be bought at a boat chandlers. I also intend to seal around the outer frame edges incase the water is finding it's way through there, as well as placing a bead around the sunroof seal on both front and back glass panels.

Good luck,

This is getting beyond a bloody joke now!

The first time it happened I too put it down to the sunroof possibly not being closed properly but today water has been pouring into the car through both sunroofs.

The back one is the worst, the rear seats are soaked and so is my 20 month old daughters car seat. :bang:

Phil,

It could be that second leak was actually stored water above the headlining, as it would make sense if it was now coming via the back roof.

If it is any concillation, I know what you are going through and currently have news papers all aover the floor and seats of my car, along with two electric oil heater placed in front of the centre seats attempting to dry the bloody thing out; despite the weather working against me!!

Well I've just been back out to the car and water was pouring in from the rear sunroof when I lifted the blind up.

How on Earth can Fiat make a car where the sunroof leaks like this? Every seat is soaking wet now. :bang:

I agree that most of it must be from stored water as the front was only leaking when I went round a right-hand band, it went all in my eyes which is very handy when you're driving.

Any suggestions as to how to cure it? The forecast said we'd had half this months average rainfall in one day so although it's not going to leak every time it rains plus it's been in the car wash many times this really is a pain in the arse.

Phil,

I will be trying out the following, but no guarantee it will work though:

1 - Remove as much stored water from the roof and ensure the roof is firmly closed by holding the close button a second longer after the roof appears closed.

2 - For now put a tarpaulin over the car to stop further rain coming in (or put in a garage if it is big enough).

3 - Once it finishes down pouring open the roof and inspect the seals, ensoure no vegetation is preventing the roof closing or sealing properly.

4 - Let the roof completely dry and clean the seal and surrounding sun roof area.

5 - Apply a capilliary sealant to both the seals and around the frames surrounding the glass panels.

Trouble is the weather man says we will not see good weather for a couple of days yet!!

I'm pretty sure both sunroofs were closed properly but when I went back out to have a look 10 minutes ago I opened the rear one and there was lots of water sitting in the bit where the glass meets the roof. (n) My guess is it's sitting in there and slowly seeping through into the roof lining - if the roof is closed then there shouldn't be any rain sitting in that bit at all. :bang:

I've just taken these 2 photos to illustrate what I mean.

See all the water sitting in the bit where the glass meets the roof:

Now this is where lots of the water is coming in, right below where the water is sitting in the picture above. Surely not a coincidence?

Phil,

You will need to mop up any residue other wise it will have no place to go but through the lining.

The water will pool in the gulley of the roof if the glass is not sealing properley.

Well I've just mopped up any water I could find in the roof lining. One bit of good news is the front half around the sunroof buttons is dry but saying that it was dry earlier until I went round a corner.

I still think this is the reason for all the water getting in:

There's no water like this on the front sunroof, only the rear one.

To be honest I'm fed up with this car, the way I'm feeling now I might just flog the damn thing.

Just been searching Google:

I've had my Multipla since 2001 and have experienced most of the problems mentioned before. Both my sun roofes started leaking and pouring water in my lap. I did fix this problem myself though its not for the faint hearted. What I found was that the sunroof seal looks like thin black tape and it had pulled its self in on one of the corners allowing water to enter. I fixed it by running some silicon sealer roud it before putting the sun roof back in. Bluming heavy they are too! Love the car - it still goes well after 60,000 miles, but build quality and dealer support are rubbish and I won't ever go near another Fiat. There used to be an old saying - its a Fiat worse than death...

I bought 2 bottles of Captain Tolleys today, any tips on how to apply it?
Do I keep the sunroof closed and then pour it into the small gap all around the edge of the glass?

That's my topic which is why I'm confused. :D

One person says pour it on with the sunroof closed while somebody else says open.

Phil,

On the roof there is a black metal frame which the glass fits in. The rubber seal fits inside of this frame and it one side of the rubber meets the roof metal work, whereas the other side makes contact with the glass when the roof is shut.

I intend to use the sealant around the outer edge of the frame where it meets the painted metal work (approx 2mm gap) and then seal the inside of the frame where it buts up against the edge of the rubber seal (approx 3mm gap).

Obviously, you need to do the outer edge of the frame with the roof closed, and the inner edge needs the roof open to seal.
