Hello Everyone,

I have an older Seiciento. Driving home tonight with the wipers running, I heard a "snap" sound and the wipers immediately stopped running, leaving me to drive the rest of the way home with no wipers. The motor is still working (I can hear it), so I know it has somehow lost its connection to the motor. I am not an expert with cars, but can usually repair anything with a guide to follow.

I would be most grateful if anyone familiar with problem would offer their comments or point me to a guide for the wipers on this car. I have had a look on this forum and do not find anything related.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Sounds like the mechanism has simply failed big style (or the gearbox has stripped).

You'd get more replies if you posted in the Cinquecento/Seicento section. Let's Talk FIAT as the title suggests, is more for general chit chat (and for invective moved from the 500 section).

You should be able to pick up the complete assembly, motor, linkeages and all for 20 - 25 quid from a scrappy. All Sei and Cinq assemblies are the same, so lots of choice.

Lubricate the spindles and all moving parts well with spray grease (not WD40) before re-assembly (that's why most goin the first place) andkeep the old bits incase you need them. Access is through the sound insulating carpet stuff on the bulkhead on the back of the engine compartment held on by self tapping screws. Only necessary to take off the passenger side.

sounds like the linkage has broken for your wipers. exactly the same happened to me, i fixed it by using a the top of a wire coat hanger looping it through the linkage then twisting to hold it in place. Cheap ass fix i know, but up until now *touches wood* it hasnt failed me, and saved me some money that fiat would have gladly robbed me for!!!

Thank you to both of you for your replies...I will remember where to post next time.
You are correct, I took it to a garage and they told me the linkage had come away and was unrepairable. I was in a real bind because it is my only transportation and I live 32 miles from my work, so I was forced to let them repair it. They told that the part had to be ordered from Fiat (two or three days delivery), at a cost of £304.00 pounds. I know I have been royally shafted, but I had no choice. I had no time to repair it myself since I could not get the replacement parts in any quick manner.

But I will have to continue to drive with no wipers for the next few days until they repair it (they have already been paid). I was raining heavily tonight. It is indeed a real adventure driving in the dark in the rain with no wipers.

It is nice to have helpful people like this in this forum.

Thanks again for your replies.

wow. :( i feel for you mate just before xmas?! how do fiat sleep at night? i suppose im quite lucky to know a few mates who've took the motoring route as their career path. I had my punto broke into and they made a right gaping hole in the door. Quote from fiat £625, Job done perfectly for £180. Did you not try the wire coat hanger trick?!

To be honest, when I looked under the bonnet to explore I could not figure out how to get to the wiper linkage and motor. Turns out you have to remove the insulation and vent cover, but it was dark and I could not figure it out. But, I will know from now on,

I am going to takcle replacing the front brake pads this weekend (started noticing a grinding sound when breaking.) That one I will do myself.
