 Goddam pepsi-munching mofos! Just went into Sainsbury's to get some BOGOF sixpacks of Dr Pepper, (good deal, 18p/can) picked them up, paid for them, carried the buggers all the way home, put them in the fridge.

Now I pick up a can from the fridge, take it upstairs opened it up drunk some and instantly spit it out! Friggin disgusting the gits have only gone an disguised Diet Dr Pepper in cans which look exactly the same as the proper stuff!!!

It has got a big 'Z' on the front but the logo and colour is exactly the same, it was even on the usual shelf where to normal stuff goes.

Now I am panicking that they have changed the taste of Dr Pepper - can it really be true what will I drink? In the meantime I've got 11 cans of stuff which are only good for the local tip :(:(

Yeah, it's the same with the bottles, I managed to get a no added sugar bottle by mistake.

Some time ago, last September in fact, I purchased a bottle of Dr.Pepper up North and it had a totally different flavour, it was the normal full fat stuff, just tasted more like Vimto than Dr.Pepper, only less than Vimto. I should probably get round to removing that almost full bottle from the fridge at some point.

There has always been this problem with the proper ones tasting slightly different (and slightly better) than the european ones. Unfortunately the foreign ones are commonplace here because they get imported by the cash-and-carrys on the cheap. Then said cash-and-carrys sell them on to corner shops etc. You can spot them by all the german writing on the side, but it is sneaky.

Anyway I've got to the root of this Dr Pepper 'Z' mess - and it is: Acesulfame K. A new e-number cocacola are using in everything to replace sugar (it is apparently 200 times sweeter :O)

The gits are replacing their entire diet lineup (changing the taste and everything) with 'Z' versions containing this stuff instead of sugar. And they are cunning ly making the packaging almost exactly the same presumably just to **** everyone off. It really annoys me when they say "All the taste, no sugar etc" well clearly that's ******** otherwise they could just replace sugar entirely, I mean it tastes foul! I literally spat it out :D

Just checked the bottle and it does have writing in various European languages, including English, but I wouldn't have known that the English variety didn't have all the languages on before. At least I may be able to avoid being caught out like that again, although I rarely look that closely at the packaging of things I buy regularly, hence also ending up with the no added sugar crap.

I saw the Fanta ads too the other day and thought that it looked too much like normal Fanta. Then again did you know that Diet Coke now outsells fat Coke? I try to drink diet, if I'm going to be unhealthy I'll try and only be a little bit unhealthy

Richard,

Fret not, just switch over to Cherry Coke, much better than the pretender Dr P.

As for the "Z" versions, I got kinda used to drinking Diet stuff years ago so only now do I treat myself with a full sugar drink now and again. That's when the CC comes into play!

I can't stand any of the diet versions, I always find usually it seems ok when you first taste it but they all have horrible aftertastes...

Cherry coke used to be my next best thing but now I prefer coke. Always go for Dr Pepper whenever it's there though. I never go for pepsi, weird though it always seems horrible out of tins but not too bad out of a pump?

I'm sure the taste of the Diet versions has got worse. I didn't used to mind them too much when they first started doing them, although Diet Coke has always been grim, but now they are all horrible. The same goes for squash and cordial style drinks, they bear no resemblance to what fruit flavour they are supposed to be, they just taste like a bunch of chemicals.

I must confess Dr.Pepper is the soft drink I will always look for, but only because hardly anywhere sell Cheery 7Up, which is by far my favourite, despite the fact that the flavour of Cherry 7Up is a little variable from can to can and is sometimes a little weak. Cherry Coke is nice, but I prefer normal Coke, the Vanilla/Lemon varieties are foul. As for all the pretenders, there is only one Coke that is worth drinking and no soft drink is worth drinking from the pump, they are usually mixed with too little concentrate, I assume to increase profit, but when they are they seem to go the other way and the flavour is too much.

From experience behind the bar, pump drinks are mixed from the gun with concentrate and soda water, on occasion the button being depressed releases more concentrate than normal resulting in a sweeter drink, this is the one Richard likes.

Has that really been 8 years.

Well at least they stopped selling the DP-Z.
