Anyone afraid to work on their car?

'Sup

Is anyone else afraid to do any minor work on their car? I know its a learning process like anything else but I dont want to touch anything on my car out of fear of breaking it.

I can take a pc apart and put it back together easy but when it comes to cars, Nope lol

Didnt know where to post this so I just threw in here

Getting stuck into it is the only way to learn. But safety always has to come first. If you're at all unsure about the safety aspect of working on your own car then I guess you do right by not tinkering with it.

Never! i have always tried to work on the car even if i have no clue as to what iam doing, as it's all part of life.. why have a car if your not going to learn a little about it...

any job i can not do i just take it to the garage. but i will at least have a try at it first..

just get stuck in.

i remember the first time i took my head off. i was 19 and i had never seen so many bits on the garage floor before. i was worried at times, but once you're past the point of no return its too late. it all went back together with help from a haynes manual. a good set of tools and a good manual is all you need to give yourself confidence, oh and a good place to work.

Re: Anyone afraid to work on their car?

I never really used to do much work on my car until I owned an Alfa 156. If I had got a garage to do all the work I did I would be still paying it off now lol. Ive always been into computers/electronics and dont think anything of taking stuff apart but cars did used to scare me a bit. ive still got the scars on my arms and hands from working on a mini.

Start off simple, stuff like pads/discs or a minor service then work from there, just always make sure youve got the tools for the job, a guide or faq if there is one, and a cameraphone can be handy if your memory is like mine.

Like simonuk says, give it a go at least and if not then take it to a garage.

Re: Anyone afraid to work on their car?

i'm actually terrified of letting anyone else work on my car, but mine does have a touch of indeviduality that most others do not

the first time i picked up a spanner i was 17 and changed an altenator & brake pads on my 999cc uno, a few months later i had stripped & replaced a 20v cylinder head, 2 years on i have rebuilt a 20v Turbo engine and done a full conversion from 20v N/A to 20v Turbo on my Marea, i love learning
