Background

My daughter's 2007 1.2 Active had door open warning light on all the time, and other warning lights on intermittently. Periodically the headlamps would come on themselves and also the feed to the starter was also not getting power. I suspect that possibly the fuel pump wasn't getting power either, as the car refused to start with a tow.

Tools

Flat screwdriver, 10 and 13 mm sockets and ideally a 10 mm ring spanner.

Removal of Battery

Use 13 mm socket to undo the bolt holding the battery strap. Release the battery negative terminal lever, and move aside. Remove the plastic cover on positive battery terminal, then use 10 mm spanner or socket to undo it, and move it aside. Remove battery.

Removal of fuse Box

Use flat bladed screwdriver to open lid of fuse box. Use 10 mm socket to loosen nut inside fuse box. Remove nut then you can lift off the heavy red power lead. The fuse box is mounted in a metal cradle/bracket. Prise the front edge of cradle to release a tiny plastic square that stops the fuse box from rotating. You can then rotate the box through 90 degrees. You can then see three big connectors on the bottom of the fuse box. Remove these and you can lift the fuse box out.

Possible Cause

If the box is wet inside, take it indoors and let it dry overnight. In my case the fuse box was dry but the largest connector was full of water. I dried this out with a hairdryer. I then put everything back together complete with a freshly charged battery. Car started with no warning lights showing.

The issue remaining is how the water got in. I suspect it was because the piece of rubber in the right hand corner of the engine bay was out of place.
This is held in place by a single plastic stud. The hole that the stud passes through was torn and the stud was lost. I have a Punto Evo myself, and I noticed that the engine fuse box on it is completely different. Maybe others have had this same issue.
