So the car engine temperature was not getting as hot as before.
Temperature gauge was not reaching the normal position.
Car was taking longer to even get warm and the heater was not as hot as before.
Time to change the thermostat.
Book time is listed as 2.7 hours, non stop. Allow longer than this.
Tools / parts I used:-
1/4 inch socket set with 7mm, 10 mm sockets.
3/8 inch socket set with 10 mm, 13 mm sockets.
Extension bars for both sizes.
1/4, & 3/8 inch Ratchets, with swivel head were very useful.
Torx 45 bit to fit 3/8 ratchet. ( see photo below )
10mm spanner.
Screwdrivers, flat head, several sizes.
Plyers, grips.
Water container / funnel.
Torch / light.
Small mirror.
New thermostat with rubber gasket seal.
New fresh coolant ( 2-3 Litres ) and clean water to mix up to the correct strength.
Jubilee clips 2 x 16-25, 2 x 25-40, for the thermostat,
& 1 x 40-50 mm for the bottom radiator pipe.
Small strong hands, that will take some abuse.
Liquid lubricant.
Some useful tools used.
When the engine is cold, undo the coolant expansion tank cap.
Undo bottom radiator hose No. 21 from under the front right of the car.
I used a funnel and a big container to catch all the old coolant that drains out.
All the hose clips I undid appear to be one time use only. So you need to carefully break them to undo them.
There are various cable / clips / pipes that need unclipping / removing from now on that I have not listed.
Most of these cables / pipes will want to be pushed out of the way in some way or form.
Remove Battery. Negative - first , flip lever, Positive + second with a 10mm spanner.
Remove battery retaining strap nut No. 3 using a 13 mm socket.
Remove black plastic tray below battery, just pull upwards and note drain pipe attached below tray.
Undo 2 x 13mm bolts No.1-2, and 13 mm nut No. 3 ( second 3 ) holding down battery tray.
Note the three small black plastic clips to undo in top left, bottom left and bottom right corner of tray that are holding the big black plastic cable tidy attached under the tray.
Squeeze together the protruding ends to release.
Remove one small wire from behind the ECU, 10 mm nut No. 4
Push Yellow clip No. 5 towards clip No. 7, pull up Black lever No. 6.
Push yellow clip No. 7 towards clip No. 5, pull up Black lever No. 8.
to disconnect ECU connector wires.
Undo two 10 mm bolts No. 9-10 attaching mass air flow sensor to air filter box No. 12 and separate the two parts.
Remove air pipe No. 11 and Air Box No. 12 from engine.
Yes, air box is broken.
Now looking from the front left wing, at the side of the engine you can ( just ) see the thermostat. Honest, it is there.
Hose No. 13 is top radiator hose.
Hose No. 14 goes to the cabin heater.
Hose clip No. 15 goes to the expansion tank.
Hose No. 16 goes to the front of the engine?
Electrical connector No. 17 is the water temperature sensor cable.
Bolt No. 18 10mm holds a metal clip on to the side of the thermostat that hold on the engine breather pipe?
Bolts No. 19 & 20 are Torx 45 that hold the thermostat on to the engine block.
This is what the old one looks like out.
This is the new one going in.
Undo clip that is holding ( engine breather? ) pipe to the bracket that is attached to thermostat by 10mm bolt No. 18 and remove small bracket.
Remove hose clips and hoses No. 13, 14, & 16. I undid both clips on No. 16.
Unclip hose No. 15 by pushing in small rectangular button at big end of clip and pull away at the same time.
Undo two Torx 45 bolts No. 19 & 20. that are holding the thermostat on to the engine. These are hidden, a mirror and a torch will help.
The bolts are top right and bottom left of the thermostat at the back.
Unclip temperature sensor clip wire No. 17 whilst removing the thermostat. The thermostat needs to be wiggled out.
Clean up engine block face that mates with the thermostat.
Now it's time to install the new thermostat.
Note new rubber seal / gasket No. 22 will need to be fitted to new thermostat like in the old one below.
Note locating tab on plastic pipe No. 14.
Note locating tab on plastic pipe and line up with slot on hose No. 14.
Now loosely fit 1 new jubilee clip on to hoses No. 13, & 14 and 2 on to hose No. 16.
Wiggle the new thermostat in to the rough area and attach hose No. 14 and sensor wire No. 17.
Make sure that the rubber gasket / seal is still exactly in place before you
Insert Bolts No. 19 & 20 using Torx 45 and tighten to 25NM.
Note locating tab on plastic pipe and line up with slot on hose No. 13.
Refit Hose No. 13, 16 and clip hose No. 15 back on.
Position and tighten up the 4 Jubilee clips on hose No. 13, 14 & 16 using a 7mm socket.
Refit clip No. 18 using a 10 mm socket. and reposition breather pipe.
At this point I noticed that the air pipe No. 23 to the turbo had come loose.
The end of the hose had begun to age / perish.
A clean up and a new Jubilee clip was fitted to hose No. 23.
Basically this bit is the reverse of before.
Refit Air Filter box No. 12, intake pipe No 11 and Mass air flow sensor using bolts No. 9 & 10 using a 10mm socket.
Refit Battery tray using 1 x 13 mm nut and 2 x 13mm bolts.
Refit plastic inner tray, small ECU cable and both ECU connector.
Refit battery, positive & negative cables and battery retaining strap.
Refit bottom radiator hose No. 21 with new jubilee clip using a 7mm socket.
Fill coolant system slowly with new coolant mix via expansion tank.
Start engine and let it warm up.
Check coolant level and top up.
Refit coolant expansion tank cap.
Check for leaks.
Check heater works. ( better / hotter )
Reset clock.
Check temperature now rises to correct level.
.
Collect chilled liquid lubricant and apply to body parts as required. ( throat & stomach )

In the next week:-
Check coolant level and top up if needed.
Check for leaks.
Thanks. Ailurus Lapis
