Speaker Upgrade for GP 1.9 Multijet Sporting???

I have a GP 1.9 Multijet Sporting with standard hi-fi system (without subwoofer). I don't want a sub, or any speakers pretruding from the interior. So does anyone know whether there is a premium fit speaker for the front and rears that can just slot into the original speaker pods and be covered up by the original grills/panels???

I'm looking for ultra-premium speakers, so i don't mind paying, so-to-speak...

Ideally i want the most power you can get from 4 speakers that can replicate quality sound, bass-ey sound (without the need for a sub) that can go loud enough to make my eardrums bleed...

Suggestions please 'Team GP'....???

Thanks.

Simon.

P.S....Will doing this affect the warranty???

Check out my previous thread here- anything you change can effect the warranty.
Rear speakers are a very big job.

Ask your dealer first about the warranty issue,I reckon its alright as aftermarket stereos are often fitted from new (CD insteard of tape decks) so I dont see issue there aslong as wiring isn't modified.

Re: Speaker Upgrade for GP 1.9 Multijet Sporting???

In that case it maybe only worth replacing the front speakers and leaving the rears standard. Can this be done? If so i can only imagine that the sound would have to be biased towards the front to take any stress off the standard rear speakers.

I've seen a top-of-the-range pair of Boston Acoustics for the front.

What is the standrad stereo output power 4 x 45W??? Does anyone know...

Comments please.

Cheers. Simon

how much do you want to spend? remember there is probably no room for big magnets, so that could be a problem, and also some speakers have tweeters that come out far.

id look at some jl or rainbow components.

would you ever think of changing the acutal headunit? as it would probably make a big difference.

Re: Speaker Upgrade for GP 1.9 Multijet Sporting???

Up-to 200 really. I've been looking at:
www.caraudiodirect.co.uk

17cm / 6.5inch for the fronts - is that right???

Is there anything on there you would suggest, for the fronts???

I don't want to replace the factory-fit unit otherwise i will lose functionality of the Blue&Me and wheel controls.

If the standard head-unit is at least 4 x 45w, then i can only imagine this will produce a big enough sound with decent speakers at the front and standrad speakers at the back.

Simon.

i think its 6.5", thats what i have read.

Rainbow SLC265 Kick

seem decent.

try the ice section- ask for recommended 6.5" components under 200.

and dont put a title as HELP!! or you wont get any replys as most people seem to do

Re: Speaker Upgrade for GP 1.9 Multijet Sporting???

I'm probably classed as a boring old git now but I worry about the fascination with "speakers that make your ears bleed". I spent some of my mis-spent youth running a mobile disco and then playing bass in a group. I thought nothing of sticking my ear up against a speaker to see what it sounded like. Now my hearing is noticeably not as good in one ear as the other and I don't seem to have much need for tweeters because, unless I boost the top end by several dB, I can't hear the higher frequencies anyway. You young wippersnappers beware of your "1000 watt" stereos that p**s off everyone in the street and thump bass notes every lamp-post. I guess if you're in to all that you'll ignore this anyway :shakehead

Im only 20 and totally agree with you! . There's a c**t in my street with a car sound system with enough bass to vibrate the pictures on my walls!. I had a 'polite' word with him and fair do's he doesn't put it on until he's at the other side of the town now .

Thanks for the support Chris (don't tell anyone but I'm old enough to be your dad). I know loud music is great at the time but first, if we're responsible adults we shouldn't impose it on everyone else and second, if you search the web there must be no end of information about the health and safety of exposure to loud sounds and the damage done to your ears.

Re: Speaker Upgrade for GP 1.9 Multijet Sporting???

I'm not a boy-racer. And i thought ICE was something i put in my gin and tonic!!!

Calm down chaps!!!

I only want to replace the 2 front speakers behind the panels. So i can play my SADE CDs with a bit more loudness and clarity.

I do not want to be bouncing down the street like some Renegade Master with a baseball cap and baggy trousers looking for 'gobby' girls that are barely in their teens...

Nuff said!!!

This week i will mostly be wearing tweed and eating Wethers Originals with ma and pa!!!

Re: Speaker Upgrade for GP 1.9 Multijet Sporting???

For 200 you're barely going to be scraping into the premium area, let alone the super ultra premium zone which you want.

For starters, you don't want to be wasting your time with coaxial speakers. The tweeter will be in completely the wrong place to get any decent upgrade in sound.

What you want are some 6" or 6.5" component speakers. I haven't taken delivery of my GP yet, but i'm sure that they use a main woofer and tweeter in the front, as most cars do. What you want to do is to remove the standard speaker carefully, place a thick MDF ring in the position of where the old woofer was, then mount your uprated woofer onto the MDF board. If you want really good sound apply a roll of Dynamat to each too to prevent reverberation with the metal. The tweeter should be able to be hidden or placed neatly in or under the trim where the standard speaker was.

As for choosing the speakers, look at some JL's, Focals or Boston Acoustics. I have a set of JL's in my Corsa show car. They cost 400 odd, but they are amazing. Bloody loud - but they are amplified.

That brings me to my next point... Don't worry about what the RMS says on the box. It's not the RMS that makes the speakers loud, it's the mounting and the setup of them. Obviously, if you have powerful speakers, you will have a loud system, but that could just mean lots and lots of noise

Re: Speaker Upgrade for GP 1.9 Multijet Sporting???

Thanks for the advice - and i take your points on-board, but i was looking at coaxial speakers which top out at around 200.00 for the fronts. Like you say i might be compromising on audio qulity a little, but placing MDF in there, and hiding a separate tweeter sounds messy. I just want a car audio dealer to carry out a clean and easy installation...something that's unlikely to effect the warranty.

Surely a a set of coaxial JLs or Bostons in the front will sound 100 times better then whats already there??? Please reassure me of that...???

Si.

Re: Speaker Upgrade for GP 1.9 Multijet Sporting???

Even if you get coaxials you'll still need to mount them on MDF or get an adaptor for them. MDF is better than adaptors because it doesn't reverberate as much as a piece of flimsy plastic. It really is a bad idea fitting just coaxials in the front because they aren't designed for that type of use - they are made for making some more sound up in the mid to treble zone... If you want to be able to hear the full rang of the music you should think about some coax's in the back (which the car will already have some form of) and some components at the front (which the car should also already have). It's just a case of upgrading them to get better quality. Then the next step is to upgrade the soud source - i.e. the head unit. Though that's probably the last thing on most people's mind. I know it is for me as I have Blue and Me specced...

A good ICE fitter can fit the speakers for you in a way that you won't be able to notice... It's worth asking the dealers opinions, rather than buying things blindly - especially if you are thinking of spending so much on just a set of coax's.
