Just finished replacing the "original" aftermarket (part of the trim) JVC head unit with a new Sony one for USB & FLAC support, along with Bluetooth. And man, what a fiddly job! But seems to work off the bat

Here's the quick'n'dirty method:

  1. Unplug the battery negative terminal, to avoid frying electronics by accident
  2. Push the four clips in the inside groove of the old HU bracket in, and try to get it to unlock all at the same time.
  3. Then try to unlatch the two steel clips on the far left and right edges, that hold the entire old HU attached. In my case, it wasn't just a matter of "click-click-pull", but rather a surgery with alternating steps between pulling each side from the inside HU with a screwdriver, while trying to keep the latches unhooked. This took a good part of 15 minutes, even with the actual removal tools! It simply would not move more than 1 mm at a time, and kept reattaching itself while working on the other edge.
  4. When it entire HU finally comes out, there were just two plugs in the back
    1. The data plug (CANbus?). There were no RCA plugs used for audio in the original nor the new one.
    2. The antenna
    3. And also a small spacer with a rubber hat around it
  5. So, unplug the two and the original HU comes off. The data cable had an adapter cable, which could be removed by pressing in two plastic clips on one side of it with a small screwdriver.
  6. Then, remove the steel cage that still remains inside the fascia. I had to use a screw driver and some brute force with thick gloves, as it was very tight!
  7. Now, the new HU came with its own steel cage, which was attached to the HU itself with similar latches you undid earlier.
  8. You have to remove the plastic bracket and then the steel cage from the new HU. The steel cage is removed by undoing the latches.
  9. The steel cage luckily fit around the existing fascia with a bit of fiddling - still, a tight fit - as the two fascias that came with the kit were the wrong colour (light grey and darker grey), whereas my car has a black fascia.
  10. Now, push the new steel cage inside the empty hole in the dashboard, and pull the two cables through it.
  11. Then connect the antenna cable. You can also use the new antenna "plug" that came with it, but my original one didn't look too bad either. Still, I used the new one.
  12. Then plug the original car wires into the two adapter heads the new HU came with, and then plug the other end of the adapter cable into the HU
  13. Now, use some controlled force to push the HU into the steel cage inside the fascia. You might need to adjust the wires inside the console to get them out of the way. If the HU "jumps" back from inside, there's probably a cable between the HU spacer and the back of the HU.
  14. When it is fully in, you'll hear a nice click from both edges.
  15. In my case, there was a click, and then it jumped yet again with the steel cage included. So just fit it again a few times, until it stays.
  16. Then attach the plastic bracket around the HU.
  17. And finally you can attach the front of the HU, with all the knobs etc.
  18. Re-attach the battery negative and switch the electricity of the car on, or start the car.
  19. You should now see a demo screen from the new HU, but it's worth it to try the radio, CD and USB and make sure you have audio from each
Finally, USB and FLAC :slayer:
