My Fiat GP is on 57,000 and is due its annual service (last service May'12). As it's not up to the 72k yet it will be just an annual service I think.
It's going to cost about £200.
I also need the timing belt replaced - again another £210.00

Money is a bit tight at the momment so which one would you have done first the service or the belt?
What's more important?

Also I've heard that whilst having the belt done i should have the water pump replaced as well - is this right?

Any thoughts or advise will be appreciated

Cheers (y)

We'll if the timing belt goes, your knackered. A service can wait another month. I've gone through 2 belts and mine is on 86k. They usually so the water pump with a belt change usually aswell

Depending on what engine it is, mines a 1.4 so I do mine every 50k, the only reason why I had it done twice is because I went through a moment of doing high mileage. I do a service every 8k but do it myself :/

We'll, I would think about getting it done personally. You get the water pump done aswell.

I once had a C2 which was on 70k and unfortunately the previous owner didn't have a clue. Cambelt went, valves bent, piston blew and something else went, I bought it for 1 grand, and cost me about 700 to repair

engine is a 1.4 16v

its on 57,000 and has never had belt repalced as yet.

So long as you haven't done lots of miles in the last year I'd change the timing belt. If your oil has only done say 10k, its probably in pretty good condition; lots of manufacturers only recommend oil changes every two years (if the mileage limit isn't reached).

Ps, definitely change the waterpump. Its about £85 extra at a franchised fiat dealer, less from an independent.

Are you in no way mechanically minded....? Plugs, air filter, oil filter and oil are all pretty easy to do with a wee bit of patience and tools and place to do it. Is car under warranty still? Also head to an independant garage and ask how much to belt with water pump and do service at same time. Ie For the belt they will have the car in bits anyway.......that makes it a lot easier doing the service. Also see about buying the bits yourself......u will probably be able to get them cheaper than the garage will charge you. Especially the stealer.

Where are you based? See if there is another GP owner who is in same area who can recommend a garage.
Just a thought.

As far as I know the Punto engines are non-interference meaning minimal, if any damage from a worn belt, as oppose to normal cars.

I wouldn't go by this, but I read on here that the above is true and so I have delayed In having mine done ;)

NO NO NO.

8V only, 16V is interference, as is 8V with VVT I believe.

KenMayor - To be honest i'm not very mechanically minded at all, hence why i'm posting on here to ask what is probably a quite straight forward thing.

But I appreciate yours and everyone else advice - thanks all ;)

I've been quoted £205 for the new belt all in and £210 for the service.
To be done at the same time, by a Vospers garage who claim they are Fiat specialist.

Thoughts?...

I paid £385 inc waterpump at a franchised fiat dealer so £200 odd sounds fine. Does that include the pump?

No that price didn't include the water pump.
How essential is the water pump then?

Well you can replace the belt all you like but if the pump fails (and they do) then its the same result as a snapped belt. You might as well change it at the same time as the belt because that way there is little or no extra labour charge.

As said above, water pump failure can be as damaging as a snapped cambelt. And also potentially do more damage with head gasket coming to mind. Get it all done, and you should have a sound car.
