Hi all,

had a problem about 2 months ago with my alternator packing up, got a bad smell of burning and then the battery light came on and power steering went stiff, check charge on battery and it wasnt charging so we changed the alternator. the old alternator was a 120amp, but we didnt know until we took it off that it was 120amp so when i bought the new 1 from a motor factors (before we took the old 1 off, just to be prepared) they took the cars details and sold me a 105amp alternator, the bloke who fitted it for me said it should be ok still, so he fitted it and all has been ok. now, not long after he'd fitted it (about a day) i got the same smell as the first 1, battery light came on etc... stopped the car started it again and the car was normal again so i put this down to just a fluke. now the other day the battery light came on steering stiff, checked the charge its not charging again! now me and my old man think it could be something dripping on the alternator i.e oil. because for both to do similar things in quick secession we think it might be something like that, or as the tile suggests would it make a difference using a 105amp as opposed a 120amp alternator?

thank you

Dave

early puntos have a problem with the scuttle drain discharging onto the alternator, there is a modified drain hose available to fix this.

Many members have also reported problems with aftermarket alternators and the electrical system on the punto. The consensus on the forum seems to be that only official fiat re-con units can be relied upon not to give trouble.

The vauxhall astra 1.3 diesel is the same engine as in some GP's

And they too suffer with alternators lasting short periods

Now the amp rating isn't too much to worry about
Only if you were running lots of extra lights / Sound systems or accesories that the 120amp would be better

The less amps, the slower it'd charge the battery, and less power when demand is on
(ie you could easily end running off the battery instead)
