A bit harsh? A broken spring is a fail, surely you'd prefer to know its broken, rather than pass, then gave a serious accident due to not knowing suspension was broken.

Can't knock a man for doing his job.

i know, im going on what my friendly garage mate said. he said according to the new rules, as long as the spring is in the cup thingy and seated properly it should be an advisory..

in fact yes i was a bit harsh, just had a bad day thats all.
i take the above comment back.

It's always been a fail as far as I'm aware as its a danger due to the affect it can have on the cars handling!

I work at an mot station, new rule came in recently but yes, if only the tail end of the spring is broken and it is still secure then it is just an advisory, daft tho really

this is exactly where my spring is snapped. at the end. its still secure and doesnt 'move' :/ anywho fail is a fail.

decided 40 mil, think that should be enough specially with the height of the speed humps around here :/

Too true! Obviously whoever re-wrote the rules has never seen what happens when a spring looses the bottom coil, dislodges over a bump as it's now shorter, and rips through the tyre. :(

Saw it no end of times on the Stilo's before the infamous "spring-catcher" recall mod.

Springs puncturing tyres was an issue with a few manufacturers....Personally i can only imagine that the rules have changed due to manufacturers approaching VOSA stating it isn't an issue ..
As in the truck side we had a certain model that would leak air at the footbrake valve at certain times ,which is a fail. But the valve manufacturer then went to VOSA to prove that it was safe and in certain instancesit would leak..Warranty had a field day rejecting valves that had been changed

........not really 'sad times' though, sad times would be my wife has left me, dog bit my nose off, goldfish drowned, lost my job and house repossessed....broken spring for MOT would IMO be getting off lightly:)

Failed MOT, broken spring or lowering advice would be more suitable.
