New guy needs help with uneven tyre wear

Hi I've owned my '05 1.9jtd high roof taxi for about five years and it has always worn the outside edges of its tyres. The wishbones have been replaced recently but the wear is the same. I'm thinking too much positive camber is the problem.

I'm wondering if lowering the front would remove some of the positive camber?

Does anyone know if the later facelifted Doblos have shorter front springs?

Any help is appreciated guys

If anything they look higher up.. I raised my front and rear springs just to have the carrying capacity of the newer doblos.

I also moved onto higher profile van tyres 185/70/14 which have higher load ratings. With this and the spring upgrades..it drives so much better over bumps.. and the shocks take less of a pounding. Will see if this setup which is more fitting for a Van wears tyres as fast.

My Doblo has been to the local tracking specialist and for an alignment and it's still eating the outer edges of its tyres

It sounds like you're trackrod ends.
We've had to replace both trackrod ends on our Doblo
1.9JTD Dynamic 05plate, that is most likley to be the cause of uneven tyre wear & poor handling.

Re: New guy needs help with uneven tyre wear

Hi Sned, seems a common problem on taxi'd doblos, I look after about 20 for a guy and most of them since new have worn tyres at a rapid rate compared to other vehicles, think it's the useage they get as taxi, one thats used on airport/long runs does get much more mileage than the ones used around town.
As it's always done it, unlikely to be due to worn or badly adjusted components, most reliable garages won't track something with worn components, its in their interest to check items first for a possible sale.

Scott7763725272, how did garage alter camber as I thought this was fixed on doblos? Would like to know as would be handy to try,ta John

Hi there, il get on to the garage that did the work, although i did not leave on good terms, i originally kept stating to my garage that my dobbin was pullin to the left although it was not too bad it was just annoying, he then said he would ''alter the camber'' and check the tracking and alligment etc, only to then say after this ''work'' was carried out that everything was fine and explained in little detail about all the camber alterations that can be made on this doblo (2003 1.9JTDsx).

so i got in the van and left the garage (bill paid) and its still pulling. so i went to a dedicated tyre and tracking service place to just get a second (or in this case 9th) opinion. (seriously you do not know the extent of my problems) found out to be the tracking and was out by 2.5. hence the pulling.

but back to your point, i do not understand fully about the camber alterations in total honesty and the world wide web does not tell me anything either so i think the guy (who specialise's in jaguar service and repairs) told me a load of utter twoddle i think. but i will continue to find the truth.

sorry if i confuse anyone until i seek further advice and post accordingly.

my dobbin

Could it be possible that the information given out regarding dobbin's tracking is incorrect?
It may be that somebody copied a number incorrectly & this was then sent out as official specs?

Re: New guy needs help with uneven tyre wear

Hi,
This seems to be a problem with some Doblos. Mine showed the same poor mileage and tyre wear pattern on the front from new. I put my second set of front tyres on and took the car to the local County Ambulance HQ maintenance unit. These mechanics are correctly trained and certified. They do MOT's and repairs to earn revenue for the County Council.
After explaining the problem they checked with the lazer equipment, (which is only as good as the operator), and confirmed the wheels were not aligned correctly, but were within Fiats specification. He suggested he put the wheels PARALLEL and try it and report back. This is what we agreed.
Result! The car steered lighter, (but still safe, straight and true), the tyres wear evenly across the full width of tread and last as expected, depending on how hard driven. The vehicle has been like that for 55,000mls now.
I can only suggest you go to a garage with fully qualified staff and put the suggestion forward.
Hope this helps...........TTFN.
