Hi all

Quick question, if we run our 05 1.3 multijet doblo on bp ultimate it runs very smooth and more responsive, if we put supermarket diesel in it runs really rough and not very responsive, loads of turbo lag, we find bp ultimate seems to reduce the turbo lag, has anyone else noticed this with the 1.3 doblo!,only asking bp ultimate bloody expensive.:)

The question of quality came up many times during the recent problems with supermarket petrol.
Although fuel is refined to a specific quality, the supermarkets seem to buy in at cheapest quality. The big names seem to use the same stuff but take it a couple of stages further - usually adding a few ingredients to 'improve combustion, clean the engine, better performance' etc.
Your example is evidence that this is the case - or is it just the placebo effect?
You are bombarded with information about how fantastic this 'ultimate diesel' (or whatever) is & you end up believing it.

Perhaps a trade off? Run a tankful of ultimate through after three or four tanks of supermarket special? (or every other tank?)

Different vehicle I know but:

When BP Ultimate Diesel came out I tried it for a couple of thousand miles in my Iveco 3.5 ton van.

There was no noticeable difference in how the engine ran or the mpg. As I buy so much fuel I went back to using the cheapest - van is now at 300,000 miles and still gives the same performance and mpg as when it was new. The vast majority of those miles will have been using Tesco/Sainsburys diesel with an occational splash of Redex Diesel addative.

Petrol: I used to get an extra 20 miles from a tankful of Shell optimax compared to using 'normal' unleaded in my car. Just about made up for the increased cost.

Hi sludgeguts
Even the wife notices a difference when using bp ultimate and she knows nothing about cars! also as soon as the bp ultimate is in the tank, with in half a mile the car runs alot smoother, now trying redex which seems to make it run smoother as well.

I have to concur with the benefits of Bp ultimate My 06 cargo 1.9 multijet screams nooooo!! when ever I get stuck away from a Bp garage.

I have used it since new and do alot of driving long distance so sometimes a tankful isn't enough so always seem to end up putting a tenners worth of whatevers at hand and I immediately notice a lack of smoothness and extra oomph. Have tried shell extra not as good, Surprisingly did think Totals diesel seemed ok though.

I pay 98.9 at my local bp for ultimate and get an averAGE COMBINED OF 47MPG 52+ ON A RUN so i'm happy.

i used it on my 2.2 dci 53 laguna and that really seemed to benefit.

I think the extra claims for more miles per tankful is poor but it does claim to have a cetane rating of 55+ compared to 51 for standard derv this does seem to aid in a better compression and burn + the extra additives keeps my cargo free reving and sweet.

BP for ME:)

I have had problems with supermarket fuels before too. Apparently the Diesel I bought from a Tesco petrol station had a sub standard cetane level (according to AA man). The fuel was so poor that excessive carbon build ups blocked my EGR within a day of filling up so I think combustion was incomplete (or more so than usual). Other than that ONE time I have always used Shell or BP and I find that BP is far superior even when not using Ultimate Diesel. Although the Ultimate did give more MPG over a long run, enough to get me home when I didn't think I'd make it.:D

My mechanic has always said: "Cheap fuel is false economy. You get fewer miles on supermarket fuel and have to fill up sooner anyway." so by following that advice I reckon I've spent about the same amount as I would've but been using higher quality fuel at the same time.

Thought it worth mentioning.
A woman at work has a laguna which just conked out on her today. After leaving it an hour it ran long enough to get to the garage. Local Renault specialist (not dealer) has another identical car - with the same problem.
They replaced the same part at more or less the same time & both cars are back again today with the same problem.
The only connection?
Supermarket fuel - Tesco.
Both cars conked out last time there was a mass problem.
Both cars conked out again today - watch out for something in the news?

Just to add, I mostly fill up with supermarket diesel & haven't noticed a problem with rough idling/poor running etc.
I've used Jet, Tesco, Morrisons & Asda.

Well, don't know if it's the additional weight of the towbar or filling up with Tesco fuel BUT I've only done a few town journeys & my fuel guage is farther along than I'd expect.
Previously, I was getting 25miles per small mark on the guage (100 miles to the 1/4 tank & a shade over 400 to the tank). At the moment the guage is on the third mark but I've only done 62 miles (so 13 miles out) and driving yesterday in the drizzle, I just didn't seem to have quite enough 'oommph', a bit gutless.
Today, however, things seem fine:confused:
