Ive got to sort a wireless network but the modem (NTL jobbie) only works on the USB connection. The ethernet connection is and always has been broken.

Is there a router out there that I can connect a USB modem to? or are all routers only made to accept an ethernet connection from the modem? Seems that way anyway.

have only been able to find ethernet connection wireless routers.

Get NTL to change your Modem have had a few from them for the same problem, been told it is quite common.

im on bt broadband, now normally you need a modem but ive got a oldish router, a d-link and i dont have a modem, its all built in, try and find a router with eveyrhting you need in one, saves time, money and space (y) plus your always connected aslong as your router is on and you dont need to dial up(y)

ntl is cable, thats different to BT broadband, you wont need an adsl modem/router.

what i would to is get ntl to swap out your modem, check that the Ethernet port works. then get a dsl router, there is such routers that support usb but they are expensive, and usb isn't 'proper' anyway :p

well one solution I could use is to have this pc (downstairs one which i had to give up my connection for as its the "family" PC ) on all the time and use a wireless connection to send the net upto my PC

Now, do I need a wireless hub or can I just use 2 wireless adaptors (usb jobbies) to comunicate between each other?

no ive got the 1 usb wireless thingy and my PC has a dedicated card and ariel. can they not link together that way or do they have to have a wireless hub inbetween? reason is because I dont want to spend £50+ on a router which wont work anyway because the modem ethernet thingy doesnt work (n) I already bought a router but got rid because the modem didnt work

NTL will take weeks to brign a new modem, by then its pointless because ill be moving out a few weeks later

as for a wire, we used to do it this way BUT the wire got all crappy and split eventually as it ran under the carpets etc and was just a pain in the bum. would prefer wireless as its easier and both pcs are wireless ready but I dont want to buy a router or a hub if i dont have to.

Ide rather run the net through one PC which has to be on all the time and then wireless the 2 pcs together rather than running it all through a router.

If you're happy for one PC to be always on then fine. You can setup a peer-to-peer wireless network with internet connection sharing on the host PC.

Install a Wireless Network Adapter in each PC and create an “Ad Hoc” Wireless Network. This is a network in which the two PCs talk directly with one another, rather than via a Wireless Access Point. “Internet Connection Sharing” is then enabled on the actual Internet connection in the “host” PC and the “client” PC will have Internet access provided the “host” is running and online.

To enable “Internet Connection Sharing” in Windows XP, open the Network Connections folder, right click the actual internet connection (modem connection), select Properties and then the Advanced tab. Tick the box “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection” .

When you enable "Internet Connection Sharing" on the Internet connection, it automatically configures the network adapter used for your "Home Network Connection" with the IP address 192.168.0.1 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0. If you have more than one adapter available for this purpose, e.g. both a "Local Area Connection" and a "Wireless Network Connection", you will have a drop down list from which to select the appropriate adapter. The "Client" PC's Wireless Network Connection should be set to get its IP address automatically, which it does by DHCP from the "Host" PC. Also, if you run the Zone Alarm firewall in your "Host" PC, the Internet Zone Security level must be reduced from High to Medium or "ICS" traffic will be blocked.
