It’s been sat quite a while but I’ve finally got round to having a go at getting it on the road after fitting the 1.4 16v to my cinq.

It was running quite well after fitting new coil packs, leads and plugs despite always running with a hesitation/misfire on hard load. Something I can live with. Now I’ve found another problem despite not having driven it on the road yet. If it’s left idling after getting warm it will randomly cut out. If I try and start it again it will occasionally fire but not run. Once left about 5 mins it then runs again. Any ideas?

I’m possibly thinking cranks sensor intermittent fault.?
 
I'm assuming that the 1.4 16v ECU will have OBD2, so your starting point has to be reading the codes. When my Sei's crank sensor gave up, I'd diagnosed it before I even called the AA to get me home.

BTW - you've built what I'd love to do with my Schumacher, but I just don't have the skills to do it myself.
 
Crank sensor gets my vote,

But obviously the diagnostics never lie.

Out of interest; where is the crank sensor on the 1.4? Is it on the rear of the block, at the gearbox end, under the starter motor..?

How much hassle is it to replace on the 1.4..?
 
Engine is too old for an OBD2 diag port. It’s got a standard 1.2 16v ecu with the modified d4 connector.

I noticed some of the outer insulation on the crank sensor wire damaged so banking on that.

Sensor is the same place as the 1.1 fire engine, picks up signal from the crank pulley. In fact I’m sure I used the crank sensor off my original 1.1.

I’ll get one ordered.
 
Doesn't matter what the engine is.
If the ecu supports OBD 2 then you can get data.

The problem is likely that the crank sensor will probably start dropping off when it heats up. It might not throw up an error.
To properly test it you need an oscilloscope.

If it's cheap enough i'd just buy the sensor, and fix those wires.
 
I assume he means the 1.2 16v from the mk1 punto sporting which doesn't have OBD2.

The hesitation from the hard load, i had that when i fitted the 1.4 16v. I solved it via getting injectors ( i think pug 106 GTI injector) direct fit and fit an adjustable fuel regulator and turn it up little by little.

Then check spark plugs tips, i know is not exact science but it got rid of the hesitation for me!

I really need to try and get the back back on the road!

Sounds interesting. Hesitation is much much smoother and now I’ve fitted a new crank sensor, but still there. I ran it up to temp and it seemed happier and didn’t cut out this time. I’ve only temporarily fitted the sensor as I need to figure out a way to route the wiring without getting too close to the manifold. Thinking about insurance and mot now. Actually see what it’s like on the road.

The changing injector thing sounds like a good idea, what adjustable fuel regulator fits? Do you have any pics?
