I'd just test them. ;) All you need is a pan of water and a multimeter.

Thermostat costs well under 15 quid, ten minutes to fit.

Compression tester 15 quid posted on eBay, dry and wet tests take about 20 minutes if you're not hurrying.

Those guys ought to be bankers!

Well they're definitely 'ankers'.. s'up to you what letter you put first though.. haha ;D

oh dear, i'd try another garage lol

i'd change the coolant temp sender and the fan switch. for the price of what they are. least u can eliminate those too.

Yeahh I think I'll do that, thanks for the logical idea! haha

Hi

Unless the rad is too hot to touch and the top and bottom hoses are similar there is no point in changing any of the sensors or switches, as the fan came on once, so the fan switch and the fan are probably ok.

Try a rad flush compound...

You pushed the auto to the garage, if you cook the head gasket you will be sorry...

You have not said which engine you have got OHC or pushrod?

The engine is OHC,
I'm gunna check the water pump condition tomorrow to make sure it hasn't killed it'self
The compression test showed that cylinder 3 was 50psi down.. so I'm thinking possibly piston ring,
UGH too many problems

does the coolant boil over at the header tank? might just be your head gasket gone on the exhaust side which is causing it to over heat, would explain your running probs. any luck with the heater cock? you need to sort this too dude, esp if its stuck on cold. you can kinda use it to cool the engine if your rad fan packs up.

hey, sorry I ain't replied in ages.. I've just been so busy. I changed the head gasket/cylinder head (because I had a spare one and didn't wanna go skimming the old head) and it doesn't overheat any more!
I'm still planning to fix that heater though because..well, its needed as you said. :D ..It stills runs badly though.. had that misfiring thing, so I'm gunna test the HT leads and Coil pack to make sure they're alright.

any luck with this mate?
