Hi
have been investigating raer brakes as handbrake stopped working. Actuators seem to move, looks to be plenty of material left on the shoes, so tightened up cable, but still no hand brake. Then noticed that pushing brake pedal didn't seem to stop me turning the road wheel. Can the setting of the shoes be adjusted? I was expecting some sort of snail gear but couldn't find one...
Or is it just a collection of new parts needed?
Thank you.

is your brake pedal soft or spongy ?

check the pipe lines for leaks, there are also two valves next to the brake servo that could have some problems with pressure but never heard of that before

it could just be that your brakes need bleeding but it would be a serious case if your rear wheels arnt stopping

have the rear drums off and check that all the clips are there that hold hte shoes in the as if they have perished away can give it some serious problems

Thank you both for the advice; thought I'd add an update.
Have now spent some time replacing the rear shoes and cylinders, along with a couple of the brake lines which were badly corroded. Sorted fitting the heavier guage bottom springs by holding end just behind hook in mole grips, put a couple of wheel bolts back in the hub, then used long screwdriver as lever against the bolts to push the molegrips and spring out to the hole. Hope that made sense and helps someone else as it was not too hard and avoided the need to be bionic.
Foot brakes now seem to work -although pedal was really firm when finished bleeding, but a lot softer once the engine's on and driving (?)
As for the hand brake... Can they actually be properly set up, or are they just terminally rubbish? I can't even seem to get an even application or release on both sides of the car, never mind a sensible movement on the handle that actually affects the wheels!

the foot brake will be lighter when the engine is running due to the brake servo having vacuum

you can adjust them under the centre of the car there are some bolts that you can adjust, also if you go into the car you can more the whole brake lever assembly forwards for that bit extra pull

Thanks for the reassuring explanation Ash. Are you saying there are bolts to adjust on the cable itself, or do you just mean the locking pair on the threaded rod?
Jon.

there is a threaded rod on the lower cable (under handbrake mechanism under the car) the two bolts have cuts in them so they can be put through the cable, so you move them and you can adjust the cable
