My fan belt is squealing again, last time this happened I had to replace it :-(. How tight should they be, it was so that you could move it about 10mm in the middle, but I think it should be so that it can be twisted 90 degrees in the middle. It seems a bit slacker now, with it squealing. Should it be replaced and done looser?

Thats what dave told me to do with mine :D I followed that and have not had any problems. My old belt was making alot of noise, slipping on the cogs big time. In the end it flipped and came off alternator and the crank. I would say have a look by taking off the arch liner and inspect the rubber, if the rubber looks like it has seen better days then replace it. But if the belt is just worked its way lose then tighen it up by moving the alternator back.

A little test you could do is to remove the arch liner and start the engine, this would allow you to see the belt when it is moving. From here you can decide whether to tighten it up or to replace it fully.

Hope this helps

I replaced my squealing aged one on my 1108cc with a nice tight new one and a 1242cc ;) Not squealing anymore!

It was squealing from cold and when wet so I dunno what it was- but it was knackered!

Tensioning is the relatively simple matter of releasing the top and bottom bolts slightly, then levering the alternator away from the engine, then, and this is the tricky bit, tightening the bolts while still holding the alternator in place.

Replacing involves releasing the crank sender to get the belt past it, but otherwise, same as above.

Cheers

Oh a easy DIY job :D - time to invest a Haynes manual for the Cinq to do the job on the sei.. My one is now 44k miles and the belt started to squeel a bit now (wet weather?) and once (caught a it in a split second the battery light on the dash lite up and went)

Time for a major service.

Mike
