Strange Noise from front at speed

I know there is very little conclusive advice anyone can give, but at 20-40mph, there is a wiered whining noise, quite loud, from the front drivers side externally. It's not reve related at it doesn't do when reving at a standstill (rules out alternator..pheww)

Its a bit like the old style kettle whissle but slightly lower pitch, adn started 50m ago last night on the way back from nottingham.

I jacked it up very breifly on my lunch break and apart from a splattering of oil round the bay and driveshaft, it all seems ok, pads OK, discs on secure, wheels are on tight.

I tried to shift the wheel and there seemed to be no play and spins freely so bearing is prob ok?

Any ideas before i give it a proper look over tomorrow. Could better spend the time on my project (due to oil leak i mentioned)

Cheers,

Kristian

Wheel bearing can be noisy without play.

My Alfa is in getting a wheel bearing done today - Noise had been bugging me for past couple of weeks although no obvious play. Mechanic said that they can be noisy for a while before they become a real issue.

Did you check the brake guard? These can sometimes catch the back of the disc and make a terrible noise - My Sei was doing this, more prominent round a corner. I just had to bend it back away from disc.

OK, I'm off too pick up the bearing at lunch.

They asked if it had ASB and I said I wasn't sure, but apparently all of the later model have it, there isn't the option to NOT have it! Some sensing thing...Automatic Sensing Bearing?! If it is the wrong one I can get a refund though.

The factors don't sell the nut though...I do need to replace it don't I (its staked)? If so I'll pop via the FIAT garage and pick one up. but the bearing is def coming from the factors...£25 vs £52, just hope its the correct one :)

ABS, I think. ABS relies on a toothed wheel on the hub to sense the wheel is turning, hence different bearing, possibly.

If you have ABS on your car you'll have an appropriate light on the dash before firing up.

I asked if he meant ABS but he said it was def ASB?! Anyway, I picked it up and I have no toothed wheel, which is good as I don't have ABS (y)

It turns out it included the nut, so even better.

I know it needs pressing in, do you think a bench vice will supply enough force, or should i not risk it and take it too a garage to do?

@SBurville - What is Atex? The fact I don't know means it probably isn't  -- Just looked it up, in refence to my Avtar? Just was seaching google for a picture of an explosion and saw that, thought it looked cool lol

ATEX - Atmosphere Explosive (french translation)

The Ex symbol in your avatar is used to signify intrinsically safe electro-mechanical hardware, and ATEX legislation governs the Ex-hardware industry within the EU.

yh i think i have same problem with mine, luckly mine was under warranty and i had a new speedo put on as garage thought it was that, however it still makes it. they have no idea now. so i just turn radio up.:)
