Technical OBD software

Currently reading:
Technical OBD software

I did it 3 times

Loads of connection errors, so the serial port speed is possible
Read what the fault codes are, post them on here.

Just clearing the fault code/s does not fix the problem/s causing the fault codes.
If there are faults the air bag ecu will detect them when ignition is on and so illuminate the air bag fault light.

This is what I got in the string

Did it the second & third times and got exactly the same strings

The error codes don't mean anything to me & I cant find any documentation that explains it

It seems you are not getting connection to ECU at all. Try different connection settings of another switch position on your KKL adapter.
Have you tried connecting to airbag with MES? This should really be the first step, before trying to reset with trw2scan.

I don’t have any switches on the adaptor, but I will try it with MES this afternoon and also try different serial port settings

Yes, but it also controls other systems like hazard lights and instrument cluster. So you would know is it was blown.

Thanks wapper, those all work, so seemingly not a fuse

Just tried again with different settings on the com port and it turns out that it isn’t connecting

Tried MES went to setup and scanned for interfaces and it can’t find anything, so it seems that I may have a problem with one of the two parts of the cable

Can anybody recommend a good ODB cable I can get quickly? So many to choose from on Amazon and I don’t know what is best and what is worst

Have you tried connecting to the engine cpu with multi scan? That would prove out your cable.

The one you’ve linked on Amazon doesn't have the three pin connector or 12v wires

If you do need a cable this one works well with good support too

The 3 core cable is also on Amazon.

I tried it with all kinds of software and nothing connects

Both cables now ordered and will be with me tomorrow

Good...I would start by getting a connection to the engine ECU first, as it’s less fickle, and pretty much guaranteed to work if everything is set up right . Once you’ve got multi scan working with that then move on to the airbag controller

Thanks Voko, that will be my plan, make sure it is connecting and transferring data and the. Do what I need to do

Have other work to do over the weekend and as long as I can get rid of this light, I will have everything I can do for the MoT. Still will have my fingers crossed all day Monday though

Today I tried to test my own airbag ECU connection, for the first time ever. With adapter switch set to 2nd position, the connection to "TRW airbag with pretensioners" was successful, only to learn that registered version of MES is required to talk to airbag. I wonder why, since it doesn't seem you can do a lot with airbag ECU, can only view hardware version etc.

That sounds like bad news for me!

I thought it was trw2scan which can do the airbag

I also read it should be position 3 for the airbag, so it all gets more confusing!

I got the cables today, so will bring the car into daylight tomorrow morning and will be trying anything I can to get this airbag light turned off as if I can’t, it will kill the MoT I have booked for Monday

trw2scan should be fine, it is my free version of MES that connects but does not talk to airbag.
You can try all switch positions, at least one of them should work.

I am at the end of my patience now

2 OBD cables, 2 Fiat adaptor cables, 2 laptops and every setting on every one of them and I cannot get anything to connect and on every switch position

I even tried the port under the bonnet by the brake fluid reservoir and nothing connects there either

I don’t know what to do as it looks like I am taking the car for the MoT on Monday knowing it will fail

Not sure about the connector by the brake reservoir, but the engine ecu connectors are usually tucked up in the passenger foot well or under the black fuse cover, on the bulkhead near the inlet manifold (depending on year) Also have you gone through the mes user guide regarding driver and set up of the usb/com port?

It might be useful for a future thread some pictures showing diagnostic port locations for different years/ engine variants
