Technical Rear Screen

My Mums MX5 is up for sale and it's mint!

Take a look at the link below for pics.

Click me

Its the 1.8i Sports 02 plate in mint condition with all the bells. Leather heated seats,16" alloys, six speed, new hood. I think the car has only done 15k and my mum has had the car from new. Full Mazda service history!

I would buy it but the colour is way too girly for me and Becs has her TT.

My Mum has a back problem so she is thinking of selling it and getting a VW Polo :bang:

OK i have a mohair roof and the screen is stitched in with 2 rows of stitches.
how am i going to change that when time comes as you cant get sewing machine around that roof or will it need to be new roof for mine??

is the zip ones only on pvc roofs ???

It depends if you buy original or after market, but who is going to pay £1200 for a PVC roof :nutter:

I don't think Fiat make a mohair roof for the B.

Doc you have a pm (or will have when i've finished typing this....)

As far as stitching in a new rear window... seen it done lots of times, never done it myself though...

The bad news is you have to take off the roof... but it seems that you just use a normal sewing machine but I think with a special needle.

There must be places in the UK that do this kind of work for a sensible price.
or has anyone got a g/f or wife that can sew??

over here there are hundreds of shops that replace car interior, seat covers, carperts, roof lining, windows etc.....

I recently bought 1 meter of the material. enough to make 3 B rear windows for about £2.80. From what I remember to have them stitched in was about £3.00 each inc material. If this is gonna be really expensive in the UK we could always look at shipping an old window to Bahrain and having them re-made with zips for those that have them or I can supply window material either on it's own or the guy I spoke to last week said he could supply them with zips to fit the origional fiat tops. Mine had been changed at some time and just stitched into position... but my origional hood zip is still there. I guess zips clogging with sand is not a problem in the uk. But would need an origional to work with as a pattern and ship them in bulk to cut down on postage costs.

I would not be looking at making any money on them so it would be cost only.

I will be back in UK at the end of the month with some sample rear screens for LRB to play with. lets see how hew gets along with them.

Last min thought is I could always have mine ripped out early and get zipps fitted to the 3 that I have??? just to make sure they are correct??

Is anyone else looking at replacing screens in the near future? either zip in or stitch in??

yups
i like the idea, of course there is the possibility that FIAT used 5 different types of zippers :)

In any case, yes,, i plan on changing the rear screen this year (and maybe have a 2nd spare laying about), hence, i am interested.

As far as shipping is concerned, maybe SS has an overnight stop in Bahrain every now and then... and he's got a whole 747 to ship stuff in :)

PS: if i unzip the current one, and send it, then either the same zipper can be re-used on a new window, or a compatible zipper can be used.

Maybe that is the way forward: anyone who wants to replace the window ships it over, an exact copy is send back...
something like that :)

i'm working for the next 3 days but I think maybe the best thing to do is nip back down on my days off and see if I can get a couple made with zips that will fit what's installed in my B. have no idea if it's origional but then maybe LRB or Rosso Racer can be the guinnea pigs and try them out to see what they are like compared to an origional.

Did his screen ever get repaired? I ask as mine has split completeley across and there is a repalcement zip in screen on ebay for £78 + £12 postage!

A couple of quid for plastic and a bit of sewing seems a better idea!!

 That's a bit sever given that most UK owners spend half the year with the hood up - that said you don't have an excuse!!
