Hi
What additional power does an upgraded air filter give the B? Is it worth changing it to something better?
Thks

Hi,

I recently just changed mine.

Fitted a Green Filter purchased from Demon Tweeks.

It makes the car sound a lot more VROOM VROOMY!! :D and its meant to increase the mid range torque. Haddnt drove the car much before the change so cant really say if it made a big difference. But from past experience, upgraded filters do improove the performance.

Wasnt sure i liked the extra noise at first, but now cant help putting my foot down just to hear that lovely italian roar. (y) :D

Depends what you fit, most induction kits claim to add 3-6 bhp but would would need to do a before and after on a rolling road to verify the claims. Given the acres of plastic ducting fitted to the B I would imagine that putting a direct feed system onto the car would improve airflow, I have a green filter waiting at home to be fitted once I am back from hols. CDA seems to be the best kit available for the B, its a direct feed system that does not suffer from heat degradation, costs a bit though - don't expect much change (if any) out of £200 once you have bought the kit and additional bits needed to fit it......

Let us know what you go with (if anything)....

The CDA does seem to be quite good, but I haven't had it on a rolling road.

The Doc says his sounds a little quieter than the cone one he had before, but I went from normal to CDA, so to me the CDA sounds louder, but only when you apply the power.

The theory is that the CDA should also be drawing in colder air too, whereas a cone is going to suck warm air from the engine bay.

Thanks guys - much appreciated help. If I wanted to fit a Green Filter, is it something that I could do myself? Bear in mind that I am not that savvy with car engines - but can read a manual and follow instructions!
Want to improve the sound of that Italian engine (and just can't quite afford the £500 stainless steel DTR exhaust.....)

BTW - the thread about the guy breaking his yellow barchetta (PJ Bridgefoot) - he's a top guy - have bought the hand brake cover and between seat glove box as well as an original Clarion head unit which I have been looking for for months. If anyone wants his email address, would be more that happy to recommend him

The Green kit does not demand a high level of technical expertise although depending on what airflow meter your B has you may need to relocate it. I have one sitting on the shelf at home waiting for me to return from my hols to be fitted!! If you have the airflow meter in the throttle body then its even easier, simply rip off the acres of plastic ducting and bolt the filter on the end of the rubber bit that comes off the throttle housing! Job done and mucho louder growl from under the bonnet!

I also had a few bits off PJ Bridgefoot - top guy, I would recommend him, he implied that he may have parts from more than 1 B sitting around so if you are searching for bits he may be a good place to start - if you have already tried doogal of course!!

agree with you about PJ - when i asked if he had the head unit, he said he'd have a look - came back and said no problem - he had 3!

LRB - if / when you put the air filter in, can you take some pics and post them for us less knowledgable B enthusiasts!!

Loads of pics on my fiat forum blog or my pic album

Fitting a filter will help flow but unless the flow is increased from front to back including the exhaust you will get very little difference even then it's not going to be that noticeable with the exception of sound as has already been stated, Although the car will run much cleaner and there will be less chance of poor performance due to a blocked filter.

I'd recommend a gsr kit with a full supersprint, then a remap to get the most from them.

Anyone ever put in the K&N E-9228 filter? I don't want to change the lay out of the pipes etc and it looks like this one just drops into the origional case.

I mailed the guy's at :worship: DTR :worship: a couple of months ago for their opinion on the whole 'induction kit subject'. They were very helpful but said they do not recommend fitting an induction kit as you gain very little in the way of BHP and often upset the airflow meter in the process. Their advice was to go down the route of the K & N filter as it increases the airflow without the need for a change in setup, also is much cheaper in the longrun as you simply clean it and stick it back in at each service.

 I have still decided to go for the induction kit as a fancy a bit more of a growl from the front end!!

I think that what we (or I) are trying to say is that you need to increase the input, so a CDA or cone filter does that, but you also need to increase the output with a cat back exhaust or cat replacement.

You need to be careful with a cone filter because it will suck in warm air and anything you gained in volume of air will be lost due to the heat.

So, if you're doing it for performance you need a cone or CDA, plus an exhaust upgrade, plus (in case of the cone) a means of getting cold air to it.

The K&N replacement air elements make a very small difference as the air flow is slightly improved, but it is small.

Fitting a CDA or cone is something anyone with a screw driver can do. I'm really no mechanic and I did mine!

CDA is best in my eyes but the green filter sound was much more Italian and always put a smile on my face.

I think everyone should rap the manifold in copper heat tape as it helps keep the engine bay temp down. Its only £20 - £30 and its an easy job. You do get 2 or 3 more BHP.

If you have a cone filter fitted, then cover the top rad pipe in copper heat tape as it gives off so much heat next to the filter.
