I seem to remember that was mostly true when watching the enormous waves on chesil beach at Portland when growing up.

In the good old days before the flood defence scheme was built and the roundabouts installed, At 4am when heading for work on a stormy night you waited in Fortuneswell for the 'big wave' then hammer it across the causeway 1.5 miles before the the next '7th wave' hit, only got caught once with sea up to my doors the engine stalled before I got to the bridge, not nice having to climb out and push the car the last few yards on to the bridge with freezing cold water washing around.(the causeway was closed for 12 hours not long after!) nowadays its all slow moving (30mph in a 60mph zone infuriating) traffic and rarely floods.

Are there still fishermen working, with large 'rowing boats', bringing in the mackerel and crabs?
Have you ever seen them rowing their boats along Chiswell (that's along a street, for those that don't know it) when its flooded? Quite a strange sight.

Not these days its all yachties, wind and kite surfers. Some still go for crab but not the sea of small boats that it was once.
The last time the Chisel was overwhelmed they brought in the Army, they used 10 ton lorries to act as buses, and large combat earth moving equipment to rebuild the beach, that lasted a week!

The shingle bar at Slapton Sands carries the A379 but gets hit by storm damage. A few million is being spent to move the road back from the beach.

Here's how it looked after the last one -

So we're in lockdown.
Looked out the window around 4pm. Looked like we'd had an evacuation, and I'd missed it.
I counted nine vehicles missing. Only two are working vehicles.

In lockdown mk1 I was driving back and forth to work (health care) with literally no other cars on the road. This time round you’d not notice any difference in the traffic from any other normal day, in many cases it seems most companies just haven’t bothered.

If it's anything like my employer then they'll have spent a significant amount of time and money making their facilities "covid secure" and as a result be allowed to remain open.

I got sent home in March because of Covid and wasn't able to work until I.T. caught up with the roll out. The building itself only reopened end of May.

A lot of places are probably similar to us, less than 40% of our staff work from the office (we legally aren't allowed more due to building size and lay out) and lockdown made no difference at all as measures were in place from last time.

Handy for them if anything given if like me you've had it and work from home they don't need to do anything cos you've not seen anyone from work.

was no school traffic last time, there is also a lot more click and collect this time, so people are still shopping from argos, smyths toys and other retailers doing all their xmas shopping clicking and collecting.
Looking at facebook market place and selling pages there is also way too many people going to buy crap from other peoples homes.

Monday on the M4 .. it WAS like April

No cars.. very few vans.. just Supermarket lorries

Have you listened closely to Biden? I'm trying to make up my mind whether he slurs and shortens words due to his local accent, age related articulation of words or some other factor? Or am I imagining it?

It's well-documented that Biden had a severe stammer in his youth, which he's developed coping strategies to (largely) overcome. Of course, that doesn't stop some people (especially Trump supporters) from making fun of him on those rare occasions when he stumbles over his words. In the run-up to the election, the news channels were showing an extremely touching video of Biden talking encouragingly to a young lad who was being bullied by his classmates because of his stammer, telling him that he must stand up to the bullies, and shouldn't allow his stammer to dominate his life, or limit his ambitions. Powerful stuff. He's certainly no pushover, and he's nobody's puppet. Check out this powerful speech he made back in 1986 about apartheid in South Africa. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0_v00iGJCLY
